The Only Game In Town Dying Newspapers Lecture Talk Radio Regarding Content

CLAIM: Humiliated Carr Returning To WRKO

by Brian Maloney, November 5th, 2007 at 10:20am

From industry trade publication All Access this morning:

ALL ACCESS hears word from a reliable source that HOWIE CARR will be returning to ENTERCOM Talk WRKO-A/BOSTON after failing to convince the courts to allow him to jump to crosstown GREATER MEDIA Talk WTKK. CARR has been trying to make the jump despite the court ruling that upheld ENTERCOM’s matching of GREATER MEDIA’s multi-year contract offer, but ALL ACCESS sources say to expect CARR back on the air with WRKO shortly and for WTKK to move on.

Now, which of the stations, if either, will sign up for the return of DON IMUS in syndication through ABC RADIO NETWORKS, possibly in JANUARY? IMUS aired on WTKK before his firing earlier this year by CBS RADIO. WTKK’s loss of CARR means that the morning slot for which CARR was ticketed remains open, with middayer MICHAEL GRAHAM continuing to hold down the morning fort for now.

If this is true, Howie is going to look very foolish, in the same way that Dennis & Callahan were recently humiliated into returning to WEEI.

If he really needs to be back on the air this badly, it will be without the respect of his audience, which Carr never reached out to during his legal battle.

Where’s your backbone, Howie? Was it extracted by Empress Kahn?

As for Entercom, it would mean the Evil Empire wins another battle, but the company is sure to lose the war. After losing the battle to purchase ABC Radio to Citadel, the company has since been yesterday’s news.

I still think there is an opportunity here for Howie to have a little fun on RKO’s dime. ;)
And we the listeners can vent on the Chump Line and On Air re RKO. Let’s see who can the most creative and sneak some RKO zingers in.

  • 2. Joy  |  November 5th, 2007 at 11:04 am

    You know the drill.

Listen, write down all of the advertisers on rko, then write to the advertisers tell them you will not buy their goods and services because they are advertised on a station run by the Pimp employer Entercom. Tell them the pimp employer Entercom is given to enslavement of talent, betrayal of it’s own employees, and enlistment of convicted felons who openly threaten harm to other employees on the air.

There is your letter right there. Just cut paste and edit it to your own words.

This works. Trust me. You’ll do it if YOU have any backbone. You want to talk about backbone grow one yourself and commit to making things happen it’s easy. We can never trust the voice of Howie. He is a slave. We will hear his voice but it will be a hollow shell.

Everything everything he says will have Entercom stamp signed sealed and delivered. It will be carefully crafted to sound like free speech but it’s not.

I’ve switched to tkk and others except for when I will be getting the advertisers names off of rko.

  • 3. DCL  |  November 5th, 2007 at 11:05 am

Returning to WRKO would be in Howie’s interests to the extent that it would prevent damages from accruing during the pendency of his appeal. If he is ultimately successful, he can then jump ship.

  • 4. Brian Maloney  |  November 5th, 2007 at 11:16 am

If he walks through Guest Street’s door again even once, it will be permanent. Talk about conceding defeat.

  • 5. bjd  |  November 5th, 2007 at 11:41 am

Can you imagine the fun he can have? It might be worth listening just to see how long it takes for him to be dismissed.

What’s the over / under on the days before we hear a fat lesbain comment from da Capin’?

  • 6. JazzOrganist  |  November 5th, 2007 at 11:56 am

I won’t believe any rumors that Howie’s returning until I hear him introduce his own show, live, at its normal starting time.

  • 7. Chris  |  November 5th, 2007 at 12:02 pm

I’m not altogether sure his audience is going to walk through those doors with him. Certainly some will, but I don’t believe Howie’s audience will be as great as it once was. People will be more eager to stick it to Entercom (through not listening) than they will be to hear Howie once again. In the end, if Entercom has ‘humiliated’ Howie into returning, do we–the listeners–want to similarly be humiliated into returning as well? That’s what it amounts to. I like Howie, but I hate Entercom more.

  • 8. joy  |  November 5th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

    yeah Chris! I agree.

They step forward one by one. The brave souls with backbone.

Just because we are silent doesn’t mean we can not make a big noise. Advertisers! Get the advertisers.

It will be shock and awful bad for WRKO.

Don’t listen to the water boarding of Howie, just get the advertisers and turn your head/dial.

  • 9. Kevin  |  November 5th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

    Howie,
Take care of your family first. There is plenty of time for payback.

  • 10. Ed the Radio Man  |  November 5th, 2007 at 1:11 pm

I’ve noticed there seem to be more “Howie’s voice” ads running again, maybe it’s true…

    Hearing is believing.

Who’s the reliable source? Coffee Boy?

  • 12. DAVE  |  November 5th, 2007 at 1:21 pm

This is perfect, howie back from 3-7pm where he belongs. As I said before, howie and his lawyers did not read the contract. Howie always says %*%%*them before they %^&%* you. Howie jumped offside, 20 yard penalty. Howie lost 7 weeks of pay, get back in the game, beat the big show, beat kiss 108, go back to doing what you do best, busting the hacks, especially state judges!!

  • 13. FreeHowie  |  November 5th, 2007 at 1:26 pm

Maybe WRKO conceded enough to make it worth his while. The current drive time droning has surely had a negative impact on the station.

While in the big scheme of things, I think Howie should hold off as long as humanly possible, my selfishness is psyched at the thought of him being back asap. (How can he pass up the opportunity to jab a few at Fat Matt who is in hiding “out of the country”?)

And lastly people, think of Sandy. She’s had to SUFFER her way through ToddFineburgisNothingLikeHowieCarr hour. She deserves a reprieve.

  • 14. Barbara  |  November 5th, 2007 at 1:29 pm

Kevin, you’ve nailed it. Howie needs to think about a paycheck and for the moment RKO is more than willing to give him one….and yes,,,there is plenty of time for payback,,,he’s got 5 years to pay them back, imo, he should get his butt fired, I think his sponsors are smart enough to understand what’s going on and would not hold it against him, this would leave him free to persue other ventures and take ALL his sponsors with him,,,Howie is a big talent, has a large following, we’re not stupid, we know what entercom is, can’t hold it against Howie for wanting to support his family. Think of how entertaining it will be to have a pissed off Howie back on the air,,,,the shows will be priceless, everyday he’ll push the envelope just a little more, how much will entercom take before they’ve had enough….

Oh boy…just in time for the lame interview with the PETA guy over turkeys..now that is radio!!!
Maybe we can squeeze in the Hunting segment..be still my heart!!
Anyone who misses Howie Carr on the air needs a life

I like Howie, and I also realize that he worships the almighty buck. If Entercom is bound by the same contract offered by Greater Media, then Howie would be sabotaging his own pay by mailing his show in, as the Greater Media contract offer was laden with incentives. My guess is he’ll get through another few years at ‘RKO, decide to call it a radio career, and move out of this God forsaken state of Massachusetts.

  • 18. Hugh Jass  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:01 pm

Joy, it’s quite the aphrodisiac to see you all riled up like this.

But let’s all take a step back and view it through this prism: if $1mm per year is “humiliating” then humiliate me all you want! Indentured servitude never looked so good.

  • 19. BostonVernon  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:18 pm

Howie wins either way. BIG raise, exposing the industry a little, confirming the HACK activist judicial system which practices their will over law. Back to Gitmo (rko) for you Howie! The good news is you can still terrorize this group that so deserves it. Then like the hacks you so expose take the money down to Florida I’m right behind you.

I love the idea of WRKOs paying the felon and Howie, at some point they are going to have to fire one or the other. Howie fans win either way.

  • 20. Al  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:20 pm

I don’t care what station Howie goes on, I JUST WANT TO HEAR HOWIE!!! I moved from Nashua to Oregon 3 years ago, and listening to Howie on the internet, while drinking my mail order Dunkin Donuts coffee, is my daily connection with back east (both the coffee and the talk radio SUCKS out here). And if he gets his pay raise from WRKO or WTKK, what does it matter? He is the most entertaining talk show host out there.

  • 21. joy  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:22 pm

Rich, Massachusetts is the greatest state in the country. It just lost it’s way and forgot it’s own identity and significance.

You need to spend more time at Minuteman National Historic Park Rich. Don’t forget to walk Battle Road. (www.nps.gov/mima) And while you are there why don’t you contribute to the effort to preserve the states identity.
Don’t forget to note the plethora of some of Americas greatest authors over there in Authorville/Concord. And so many many more places of significance that preserve our memory. One could go on and on with a tautological screed.

What is the matter with you saying something like that Rich? Your killing me.

I don’t think Howie’s kid’s are hurting for their lunch money people.

I’ve grown fond of TKK and the excellent reception. Nice and clear 24/7. Then ‘ol BZ at night. And evenings writing letters to advertisers. It’s a pretty good life! Have fun!

Howie I’ll always be a fan, but I won’t be listening. Thanks for “everything” Bub.

  • 22. Brent  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Howie is a moron who can’t even read and/or understand a contract.

Does anyone under 55 years old listen to Howie? Doubt it. Most of his listeners are crusted and washed up, like him.

  • 23. SawHim  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:25 pm

Col. Hunt was a speaker at a political event on Friday, and was telling people there that there was a decision coming soon - and he looked grim about it.

Of course, he DOES look grim anyway.

For Howie - ’surly’ just won’t begin to describe it. And just in time for the RKO Christmas Party with Finneran, too!

  • 24. Jim from Boston  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:29 pm

    Hi all,

It’s 2:30 PM on Monday. I also wonder if Howie is coming back today, but I think it is a good possibility.

Much to my surprise, no one, including Brian M. has commented either about Joan Vennochi’s column about Howie and Tom Finneran in the Sunday Globe, or about Tom Finneran’s commentary on the column this morning, in which he very pointedly discussed the differences between himself and “the afternoon guy.” I think something big is about to happen.

  • 25. Brian Maloney  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:31 pm

Jim, I did, but it’s on the other site. See the latest SaveWRKO post or click the blue link where name appears at the bottom of this comment.

  • 26. WRKO Staffer  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

I’m telling you, a mass boycott against WRKO advertisers would have made an impression. Not that any of you listened. If Howie comes back most of you will listen and Entercom will be very pleased with themselves. This is something that you really can’t complain about because none of you massed against the advertisers.

  • 27. Jim from Boston  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

Thanks Brian, I did check it out. Nonetheless, I’m surprised there was no other commentary, in particular about Tom Finneran’s program today.

  • 28. joy  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:55 pm

I did my level best. sniff.

    joy

  • 29. Bill  |  November 5th, 2007 at 2:58 pm

Howie- just wanted to let you know, on behalf of Jay Severin and Glenn Ordway, they both appreciate your little failed extortion stunt while they have picked up your former audience memebers, many permanently.

  • 30. The Real Not an RKO Employee  |  November 5th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

If Carr goes back to RKO, which I think he will because he needs a paycheck, doesn’t this contridict your prediction Brian?

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t you write that if Carr wasn’t allowed to go to TTK he would retire to Palm Beach since he had made so much money from his book and Herald Column?

    Just asking?

  • 31. Barbara  |  November 5th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Jim from Boston,,,,no one has commented on the felon’s comments about the Globe article because NO ONE listens to him!

  • 32. Barbara  |  November 5th, 2007 at 3:23 pm

FreeHowie,,,,,,Sandy has been obnoxious during Howie’s absence…..for some reason she thinks she’s in charge, her personality has taken on an obnoxious tone, it’s not very becoming, if Howie was behind the mic she would not be getting away with this behavior…..as for Todd, he’s only doing what’s he told….he’s not Howie but I’d take him over the felon any day….from what I’ve heard from others, the felon is a snooooooze fest.

  • 33. MELSG  |  November 5th, 2007 at 4:00 pm

This is great news because Imus will certainly be picked in the morning where I can hear him and I can continue to hear Howie in the afteroons.

Howie obviously got some bad legal advice but his fans are happy just to have him back on the air - we’ve been w/out Imus and now Howie so that past few months have been terrible!

  • 34. WRKO Staffer  |  November 5th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

Anyone think it is sort of ironic that Todd was once a substitute teacher?

Anyway, I stand by my recent post about a boycott on Entercom advertisers. I mean, if LOL would have cut back on just one - just one of his many - greasy meals from the Hearth and Kettle it would have made a difference.

  • 35. Hugh Jass  |  November 5th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

Sandy misses the free food, methinks.

  • 36. Barbara  |  November 5th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

WRKO Staffer,,,,from what I recall, Todd only did a couple of weeks as a substitute teacher,,it wasn’t a career, hopefully substituting for Howie won’t be a career either!

  • 37. Charlie  |  November 5th, 2007 at 5:16 pm

Call me selfish, but I just want to hear some funny, entertaining talk radio during the hellish afternoon commute home on RT 128.

After a bleak few months, I even wrote to Gene Burns to tell him how much he’s missed in Boston and to remind him that the food and talk audience here are so much better that he should consider coming back!

Things are looking up - Imus in the morning. Howie in the afternoon. WTTT mid day. And I subscribed to live365.com to listen to classical music in between.

Yep. I can live with that.

  • 38. Wilvus  |  November 5th, 2007 at 5:18 pm

Howie took a chance and maybe that chance won’t play out. But he took a chance. Most folks on this board don’t even take a swing at the ball still get called out. Talk radio is show business and at the end of the day a gig is a gig. Maybe Howie will be stuck at a crappy no fidelity AM station, with a pathetic weak signal after dark. He’s still better than Jay Severin. All Jay does is prattle on between his bumper music and vamp until ready (no calls please, I’m pontificating on subjects I want to talk about). Glenn Ordway is just another one of the amazing horde of jock sniffing trolls around here. Grown men who live and die by their adolescent love of big strong men playing little boy’s games and reliving the glory days of high school sports.

  • 39. Lucky  |  November 5th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

If Howie heads back to RKO…I guess after a few months, people will have forgotten the brew haha and life will be back to normal.
    Now what should TKK do?
Have you ever heard the TKK Phantom show on Saturday night?
Those boys are funny..Put them on inthe morning. Don’t you think it’s time for a good laugh on the way to work?!

  • 40. LOL  |  November 5th, 2007 at 6:54 pm

RKO Staffer don’t foget I owe you one ass whooping, well done.

  • 41. WRKO Staffer  |  November 5th, 2007 at 8:39 pm

You never showed up at Guest Street. In other words, you’re all talk. Anyway, I’m back from vacation so feel free to set another date up. I mean, I do know your life is quite busy between listening to radio 24/7 (you like even listen to those gardening shows) and yet you always somehow find time to whine and complain too. I guess that is what one does when they are miserable and old. So yes, get your face out of your greasy Hearth and Kettle meal, put down the Gold Bond and set up a time and place.

  • 42. LOL  |  November 6th, 2007 at 8:49 am

    RKO StaffHead,

If AM Radio sucks so badly, it’s only fitting that you work in it.

Your posts are the same tired, old, boring, rehashed material; day, after day, after day. Kinda like your Radio Station. Eh? ;)

  • 43. Rich  |  November 6th, 2007 at 9:32 am

    Joy,

Massachusetts was not God forsaken back then.

    It is now.

  • 44. WRKO Staffer  |  November 6th, 2007 at 11:12 am

    LOL…name the time and place.

  • 45. LOL  |  November 6th, 2007 at 11:40 am

RKO StaffHead, Downtown Tombstone, high noon.

    U bitter loser.

  • 46. annie  |  November 6th, 2007 at 2:07 pm

    Imus is coming back ???
    EWWWW
Excuse me while I throw up

  • 47. WRKO Staffer  |  November 6th, 2007 at 7:42 pm

Nice reverse ploy trying to call me bitter. You’re the one who who has all this barely bottled up rage against things you can’t really control. Go home and spend more time with your family. Unless of course you live in your mom’s basement (still 35 years after high school). You sad, sad dope.

  • 48. HowieCarrClone  |  November 8th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

How About I just coe back on the air and make some comments like Imus did, that should be enough to get me fired so I can pursue my rightful career at ttk.
