Boston Media’s House Of Cards Collapses
by Brian Maloney, December 28th, 2008 at 03:44am
Got bad news to report? There’s no better time all year to disclose it than on Christmas Eve, when few are paying attention.
Used this year by Obama to dump his internal Blago report and the New York Times Company to disclose that its stake in the Red Sox is up for grabs, it’s the oldest trick in the book.
Just a year ago, disposing of this key asset would have been unthinkable, as it ranks just behind the paper’s fancy Manhattan headquarters in value. It’s the equivalent of taking one’s family jewels to the nearest pawn shop.
As the holiday week continued, however, that nugget was revealed to be merely the tip of the iceberg. A Boxing Day story in London’s Financial Times contained the real bombshell: the Boston Globe may now be worth as little as $27m. And a follow-up report in yesterday’s Boston Herald cites a more recent Barclays estimate of $20m.
Remember: the Morrissey monstrosity was sold to the Grey Lady for $1.1 BILLION in 1993. In 2008, it is now worth what a paper in Fall River, Newport or Bangor might have fetched five or six years ago.
Here’s the kicker: according to the FT, the Globe is now worth so little that it might simply be given away as part of a sweetened (soured?) Red Sox sale. One could assume the Worcester paper would be thrown into this mix as well.
From there, the FT’s coverage moves into the realm of the bizarre, however, as it speculates that the Globe might be folded into the remnants of the Ottaway Newspaper chain, now owned by News Corp, but once part of Dow Jones & Company. Under this scenario, the Herald would shut down:
Another scenario under consideration by potential bidders includes merging the Boston Globe with News Corp’s Ottaway newspaper chain and consolidating and shutting down the Boston Herald, the Boston Globe’s rival.
Patrick Purcell, owner and publisher of the Boston Herald and a former News Corp executive, was recently tapped by News Corp to run the Ottaway chain.
Mr Purcell is understood to have visited the Globe’s printing plant in Massachusetts shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday in November, the person said.
News Corp pulled the Ottaway chain – comprised of eight daily newspapers and 15 weeklies – off the market after failing to sell the papers before a June 30 deadline. One News Corp source said it was not currently involved in discussions.
But the FT badly underestimates Purcell’s love for the Herald and its key role as perhaps the lone remaining opposition voice fighting corrupt, one-party rule on Beacon Hill and at Boston City Hall.
Though The Globies will occasionally go after one or two of our local political crooks, with Sal DiMasi as a recent example, there’s usually a political agenda in the mix: supporting other aspiring Democrats who seek these coveted positions.
Beyond Purcell’s passion for the Herald, why merge the Globe with Ottaway, when he can combine his own paper with that chain (since he is now in charge of both)?
Because the Herald is a scrappy operation with outsourced printing, a bare-bones staff and plans to dispose of its headquarters building, it easily has the potential to become Boston’s surviving newspaper.
The bigger picture, however, couldn’t be more significant: if the Boston Globe is worth only $20m, then how does one value any other print or broadcast media outlet in New England? What’s it like to own WRKO, WBZ or WTKK right about now? Or any of the local television stations?
Rather like how foreclosed properties on one’s street depress home values for an entire neighborhood, a near-worthless Globe means a full collapse of the Boston media’s house of cards. How much longer our other regional players can survive is anyone’s guess, but I’m willing to bet more than one of these outfits doesn’t see the end of 2009.
Care to take bets on who that will be?

Hahaha! Jack Welch and Jack Connors hatched a plan to buy the Globe and the NYT turned them down with a haughty, ‘We’re worth way more than you’re offering.’ Fast-forward to today: “Jaccccckkkkkkk! Please come baaaaacccckkkk!’

It is the product that the Globe, Herald and regional conglomerates try to sell to the public that has sunken them. The stories they print have little detail and only provide the same information that is heard on TV or radio. Publications have to provide readers with depth in a readable style that will compel people to want to buy the papers… I wonder how much the Globe’s “lifestyle agenda” contributed to turning off so many loyal readers. The Herald needs to dump its old hacks like Howie, Margie and Fitzgerald and let the younger writers with something to say take over.

There are several nice things about the Globe on the Internet. First, you don’t have to pay for it. And I’m always careful about avoiding click advertisements. I know I’m ‘counted’ as a reader and therefore I’m helping the Globe extract some revenue. But it’s unavoidable and it’s only mere cents. They can’t pay those big Liberal columnists big money on ‘mere cents.’ Second, I can totally bypass the biased Editorials section. In a real newspaper you have to turn the pages and at least glance at the editorial page to get somewhere else. Not so the on-line version. I zoom right by those biased DNC columns as I quickly scroll to the Sports section. Keeping eyeballs away from those Globe elites puts a smile on my face. Finally, you can comment on the stories in their ‘comments’ section. No longer is the Globe running a one-way ship full of biased thought. Now, we have snowballs to throw right back at the newspaper and its writers.

I think the media echo chamber might be propagating a typo; the number MAY indeed be $120 million. Still, that’s a long fall from $1.1 billion.
Having Mr. Purcell take over the Globe, combine ops, and turn it into the Herald with the Globe label would be a delicious irony. What would happen to the bow-tied bumkissers??
To Larry, above … you can’t get rid of Howie. You have to make him the featured columnist … of the Boston Globe!!
7. Anti Brian | December 28th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Boston Vernon,
How is TKK going to get Rush and Howie Carr by going into Chapter 7?
And if Greater Media went chapter Ch.7 how would that allow WBCN to get the Celtics and Red Sox?
I am confused
8. Joe from Brighton | December 28th, 2008 at 11:34 am
It is fun to watch The Boston Globe wither away.
Who would even pay 20 mil for this rag?
A billion dollars 15 years ago? Good job, NYTimes!
If it goes, so goes “gay marriage” and other liberal social policy forced upon Massachusetts in the years to come? So goes the income tax?
Can’t happen quick enough!
Rest in Hell, Globies!
9. Celtic Frost | December 28th, 2008 at 11:54 am
I, for one, enjoy the “bow-tied bumkissers” (thanks, Howie) at TBG.
They mirror the majority of MA residents: look at our legislature and our governor and our judiciary, my dears — in short, across the state we consistently elect people who reflect our progressive agenda.
So I don’t really get why you VRWConspiracy loonies think the Globe does not reflect MA. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting.
Kindly,
CF

LOL Celtic Fraud. There is nothing KIND about you…
You are a faker, fraud, mental, sad, pathetic, hideous, fat and a SSI drain.
I know most of the regulars around here know that but consider this my PSA ALERT to any new blood around here.
You are not to be taken seriously and only post to agitate. I hope your Christmas was the loneliest EVER, you D. Bag!

“the remnants of the Ottaway Newspaper chain, now owned by News Corp, but once part of Dow Jones & Company.”
Talk about a distinction without a difference…
12. CerebralWaste | December 28th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Anyone want to start tossing in some money to buy the Globe? 20 Mil shouldn’t be that hard to raise and then we can toss out all the bow tied bumkissers and turn the Globe into a real paper. A paper that truly reflects what the people of Massachusetts want to read. Not that “Liberal Swill” that is currently being typed out.
13. Just Watching. | December 28th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
JSYK, how do you know he’s fat? (LOL!!)
Wow, a paper that in 15 years looses over 98% of it’s value. You would have to be a San Francisco paper to pull off a stunt like that.
14. Bob Porrazzo | December 28th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
I wouldn’t read The Boston GLOB for all the tea in Boston Harbor. And the NY Times OWNS A STAKE IN THE RED SOX?! Well, this Yankees fan and conservative (A double whammy in Massachusetts, ESPECIALLY BOSTON) is GLAD HE SUPPORTS THE PINSTRIPES A TEAM THAT CLEARLY DOES NOT NEED A BAILOUT!
The Boston Globe–a paper fit for training–YOUR PETS THAT IS!
15. Laurence Glavin | December 28th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Didn’t CBS, Corp. just unload THREE full-power FM’s in Denver for just $19-million? ( Did it also include assumption of debts?) If so, any single Boston property may be even less.
16. Joe from Brighton | December 28th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Sadiki Kambon found!
The usual anti-American, anti-Israel tripe that can always be expected from this pro-terrorist, pro-corruptocrat defender was broadcast on today’s Todd Feinburg Show on WRKO during the 3pm hour.
How can one miss Sadiki when he just won’t go away!
Sadiki is proof that one can get through life without ever holding a real job.
17. Skunky | December 28th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Hey Joe!
Yes…Todd is the only WRKO Personality (are there any others left?) that lets that racist fabulist (and denier of facts and truth) on the air. Everyone else just ignores his dumb arse because he’s a hero to kooks ONLY.
Just remember what he and Chuck Turner did with porno..saying it was American Troops raping Iraqi woman. LOL, what a pair of boobs!
18. JSYK | December 28th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
I know Celtic Fraud is fat because I actually know OF HIM and have seen him, as I stated so this summer.
Oh, we are NOT friends because like every awkward, spastic, mental case…he has NONE.
And for those like Just Watching…”Laurence Glavin” is also a nom de dope that “Celtic Frost” posts under. All you have to do is go back to the summer when Tony Snow died and I exposed that fakery of Celtic Fraud (of course he said horrible things about Tony Snow’s sad passing). No, he’s not gay (or really as Liberal as he posts) but he is socially retarded and has no friends so what the hell else is a loser to do?
Just So You Know, y’all!
19. Celtic Frost | December 28th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Avi Nelson also lets Sadiki on air. And he often debates him for 5+ minutes, too!
You can tell the difference between JSYK and me because I always stick to the thread, while JSYK always slips into his “always-be-hatin’” persona. So sad that he is consumed with envy over me and my happy life. I am a progressive, short, stocky, balding, middle-aged, gay, happily married Jew (stepfather to several children from my hubby’s first / breeder marriage). Who really cares, JSYK?! No one, that’s who. Get over it.
And, as usual, Laurence Glavin will back me up that I have not now nor ever posed him, as JSYK always alleges. So sad.
20. JSYK | December 28th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
LOL…you fat, sad joke Celtic Fraud!
Remember that time you LIED and said you were off to Guatamala to adopt a baby and STILL posted on here? What a joke you are…real people spend QUALITY time with their families NOT obsessively posting on here and stealing other’s handles. LOL!
But then again, all you have is the net, huh, LOSAH!
21. Celtic Frost | December 29th, 2008 at 7:19 am
It saddens me that you take such pleasure in ridiculing other people’s sexuality and body type and family tragedies, JSYK. I am going to need an extra visit this week with my therapist Javier because of your truculence. And likely an extra appointment with my masseuse, too.
Yours in peace,
-CF
P.S. Is the Taylor family still big at the Globe, Brian? Or have they all been set out to pasture? They were not very bright, as I recall, but apparently brighter than the NYT crew since they fleeced them so thoroughly.

The blogs are getting to certain thin skinned hosts. Michelle McPhee and Margery Eagan have already spent airway time griping about these blogs and their nasty posts. Keep it going in 2009! Maybe Margery will be left to desperately submitting articles to the Brookline Tab.
24. Celtic Frost | December 29th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Staffer, where you been, man?!
A (blogging) nation turns its lonely eyes to you!
I think Margery and Michele are both very self-conscious about their looks: Margery due to being 30 years past her prime, and Michele about her Mrs. Potato Head physique. No wonder she likes cops and firefighters — those guys are almost always grossly out of shape a few years out of the academy!

WRKO Staffer although I totally agree with your last post it’s very apparent that you love to rag on the WTKK Lineup (perhaps, deservedly so) it’s hard not to think of WRKO’s lame-assed lineup as you bash and bash.
-Felon & Friends!
-Howie Carr (former fan, but his show is not great)
-Canned Michael Savage (when sports isn’t boring the audience into a coma)
-MaryEllen Burns (Fat Matt Apologist!)
-That mono-toned drone financial guy who’s WHOLE show is hours of a show intro over and over again.
-AM Coast To Coast with infomercials crammed in on the weekends!
And having Celtic Fraud as your Boyeee (say like Flavor Flav!) on this board is not helping your ‘RKO rep. (Cringe!)
29. Skunky | December 29th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
WHY are you smart peeps STILL listening to WRKO when you have a computer?????????
For the love of Pete, go to radiotime.com and pick ANY show you want to listen to! Michael Medved is LIVE today!
STOP THE MADNESS!!!!
30. WRKO Staffer | December 29th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
JSYK - I rag on WRKO types too. I always thought it funny when the exurban sprawl lunkhead class came on here to extoll the virtues of DePetro’s “biting humor”. I suppose people’s brains do get kind of soft when they dine at Applebees, get angry at their kid’s hockey games and live in pre-fab developments (the i.e. perfect right wing radio fan). Regarding the mono-tone financial guy, he is great. Don’t you understand “so bad it’s good”? It’s a horror show of epic proportions. It makes the Sunday morning gardening shows seem like a Who concert circa 1971. How about Pat “pay for play” Whitley? Now that is “so bad it’s good” too. Don’t you love the old ladies from places like Reading and Weymouth calling in to recommend the 99 Restaurant? (actually happened…I swear). That is comedy gold my friend!!! Also, how about Whitley promoting that C level entertainer “Joey Voices”? Does radio get better than that? I think not. Oh, by the way, me and Frosty are here to make you long for the days when the “Scotto Bloggo” ruled supreme. Hey, ho, right wing radio…let’s go!
31. JSYK | December 29th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
WRKO Staffer, I am so very sorry your medication is no longer working. Que lastima. I know worrying about keeping your job is trying.
How do you know if anyone here has ACTUALLY dined at “Abblebees” regulary, and what is wrong with that anyway? I know you think you’re a knee-slapper, but your humor falls like an anvil of a curb. You’re the only one laughing at your bad jokes.
How many hockey games have YOU have been to where fellow bloggers have been? Where is the data that proves Right Wing Radio listeners live in pre-fab houses? If you provide the proof I’m sooooo willing to believe.
Oh, and I don’t listen to ANY of those supposedly so bad that they’re good shows on WRKO. I have an iPod so I don’t have to listen to the poop on WRKO when I can podcast any show in the world I want to.
Wow! Celtic Fraud FINALLY has a friend. You may think you’re clever WRKO Staffer but getting in bed with fat, smelly, lonely, socially awkward and SSI drains can’t be fun. Do tell us when you know for sure. Don’t say you were not warned.

Just cuz BJD handed you your ass last time (and it’s still smarting , I see!) you THINK anyone that slaps your dumb self down is BJD. (Sorta like how you ALWAYS stereotype right wing talk radio, uncleverly, I may add). Like a typical liberal, you can only throw bombs and can NEVER back up your retarded statements.
Just look in the archives, fool. I’ve been here longer than BJD and my style is very different. Helen Keller knew that.
I was able to unmask Celtic Fraud and I will stealthly do the same to YOU. Watch me.
34. WRKO Staffer | December 29th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
JSYK…for someone who listens to an IPOD all the time, you are obsessed about Boston radio. Don’t you have Creed songs to jam out to on your beloved IPOD? Or perhaps you’re more of a Parrothead. Either way, your IPOD library is undoubtly a disaster that only a tool like you would find cool. Speaking of retarded, you seem really proud of winning internet battles (the clearest sign that someone is a loser). Here is some advice, winning on the internet is like winning in the Special Olympics, even when you come in first, you’re still a retard.
35. JSYK | December 29th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
No WRKO Staffer, I’ll leave the geeky Creed songs for sad slappers like you to listen to. All you need to know is that WRKO is NEVER on my iPod, LOL.
Look who’s saying someone ELSE is obsessed with Boston radio? Do you say that to your turtle dove Celtic Fraud when you lick his fungus filled toes when you go for your nightly booty call? Hmmm?
You and your Boyeee Celtic Fraud are the biggest losahs on here…one who is sad and alone and you a tragic hanger on to a sinking ship. What’s a matter, you can’t take it when someone puts your moribund radio station down while you post and post smack about WTKK.
For someone so liberal, you have no qualms about making fun of Downs Syndrome kids and old ladies. Yep, you’re a typical lib…a big, goofy, disgusting HYPOCRITE! You’ll never get a job at 96.9 when your eventually fired. Tick-tock, tick-tock, lol!
36. WRKO Staffer | December 29th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
I don’t give a toss who says what about WRKO or anything else on this blog (that’s the difference between us…you care very deeply hence your all cap mode). It’s sad yet funny to witness you get so very, very worked up about every post Frosty and I make. Why are you so angry? Now tell us, what are some of the tunes you have on your IPOD? I want to find out just how lame your musical taste really is because you certainly come across as a total tool on this blog.

Oh, no, I’ll never tell you what is on my iPod. You’ll have to keep dreaming, dummy. I saw what is on YOURS though…I’m sorry about your lack of job security…your anxiety shows from your song selection……………..
-”Rosie, You’re Fired”- Donald Trump (everyone else, go to “youtube” to see this gem!)

39. Jim from Boston | December 29th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
On Dec 29, JSYK wrote of “WRKO’s lame-assed lineup” to include:
-“Felon & Friends!
-“Howie Carr (former fan, but his show is not great)
-“Canned Michael Savage (when sports isn’t boring the audience into a coma)
-“MaryEllen Burns (Fat Matt Apologist!)
-“That mono-toned drone financial guy who’s WHOLE show is hours of a show intro over and over again.
-“AM Coast To Coast with infomercials crammed in on the weekends!”
To which WRKO Staffer replied: “Regarding the mono-tone financial guy, he is great. Don’t you understand ‘so bad it’s good’? It’s a horror show of epic proportions. It makes the Sunday morning gardening shows seem like a Who concert circa 1971.” JSYK replied: “Oh, and I don’t listen to ANY of those supposedly so bad that they’re good shows on WRKO.”
D’uh?! I resemble those remarks! I listen to them all. Of note:
-Tonight Michael Savage was live, discussing the Gaza strip issues
-Mariellen Burns has a nice convivial personality and a nice radio voice
-The mono-toned financial guy does reasonable political / economic presentations
amid his repeated intros on Saturday morning, but admittedly, his early Sunday AM
talk show is so unique (bad), it becomes interesting
-AM Coast-to-Coast, when it has down-to-earth guests is one of the few talk shows
that have prolonged interviews that allow for adequate discussions of the topics, for
example, Robert Zubin on energy policy two weeks ago. The problem with
WRKO is when they pre-empt some shows for the infomercials, but this is only on
the weekends. Even WBZ cuts the Jordan Rich Show short on early Sunday
mornings.
My point is, for me at least, I listen to talk radio for continuous audio input into my day, and often it does serve only as background because I need to concentrate on something else. Sometimes I listen intently. In any case, the silence without talk radio is deafening. If I can’t stand the host, or the topic, I just tune into something else on another station, a podcast (if not restricted on my work computer), or an XM download. For my circumstances WRKO for the most part nicely fulfills my needs. Just about the only talk shows I avoid are the gardening shows. Listening to the programming, there are always callers who seem to enjoy the shows. I hope WRKO is worth saving.
40. Skunky | December 29th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Hi Jim! Most of the people here are obviously talk radio enthusiasts, so we listen as much as you do but don’t you see that it’s not for nothing that we may wanna see WRKO tank? WRKO is tanking because the people who have the power (Julie and Coffee boy) have let it go to pot. Listeners are not happy and are taking their ear somewhere else.
It’s not the listeners fault that the shows stink. It’s Julie Kahn and Jason Wolfe! The morning show is unlistenable, Howie Carr hates where he is (and if he hates it, it’s going to be passed on to listeners) and Michael Savage should be mostly live, but you know lately he hasn’t. Why should local listeners have to support WRKO when in the internet age we can listen to any show we want?
Because of WRKO sucking (and WTKK as well) I at least was able to venture out and find out what real great talk radio has to offer. I’m glad too because all the good radio I have found is far better than WRKO be it on podcasts, internet and satellite radio.
We don’t want WRKO to tank, but if it is, it’s not the listeners fault. Luckily we have options.

JSYK - Will you ever stop? You are angry, creepy and probably a danger to those around you. I will focus on Boston radio issues. You should focus on your lame IPOD. Still, it is probably so very lame that you need to continually come back on to this thread because you always need to get the last word in. This goes back to deeper issues having to do with your childhood and your mommy. I am truly sorry that you were not held enough by your mommy but it is somewhat tragic that it has led you to become an internet nut-job. Get help. This may be heretical on this Blog, but even though I have explored podcasts, internet, and satellite radio, I still like listening to WRKO as I wrote previously. I have been listening since the early 1980’s and I have enjoyed nearly all the offerings as they change through the years (except gardening shows J. In fact with all the other options available the choices are tougher.
I hope I am not alone in my opinion. I have in the past asked how many correspondents to this Blog are actually callers. I even once asked Joy if she was really Patrice from Arlington on Howie’s show. On the other hand, it seems there a lot of callers who really like the shows, many more than the number of Bloggers on this site. Also, I travel occasionally outside of New England by car, and I haven’t found as enjoyable a local line-up elsewhere as I have on WRKO.
I do have to agree that WRKO may well be in danger of tanking, and perhaps it may be the fault of J and J, but in this downing economy with so much market fragmentation and likely a dwindling audience for talk radio anyways, our support for or against WRKO may be moot.

This is why I have consistently implored Brian to convert to a full registration site — so trolls like JSYK cannot ruin good radio discussion that the rest of us are seeking. I agree that he could be dangerous, but is too stupid to be any harm:
JSYK used to threaten to “expose me” by ferreting my IP address with his superbad IT skills. I told him I use an anonymizer just to insulate myself from creeps like him, but he did not get it. He kept threatening to “out” me. Sigh. Stupid people suck. I have never posed anyone on this site, ever, and am always little ol’ me (for good or bad).
Go listen to your best of Jay Severin on your iPod, JSYK (btw, didja know he is really a flaming liberal???!!!).
