BREAKING: Major Layoffs At WBZ Radio?
by Brian Maloney, December 30th, 2008 at 05:07pm
Hub Politics Live-Tweeted The Election and The Victory Party
**** UPDATE: CONFIRMED BY THE BOSTON HERALD ***
Rumors of deep cuts at WBZ 1030 AM have been running rampant in local media circles for some time, but now, one inside source claims sports anchor Tom Cuddy, overnight host Steve LeVeille, as well as weekend talkers Lovell Dyett and Pat Desmarais have all been sacked.
So far, this is entirely unconfirmed and their names are still found on WBZ’s program schedule. So take it for what it is and nothing more, at least at the moment.
But if this turns out to be true, it’s a sad day for WBZ. With a mammoth overnight signal reaching many states and provinces, it’s hard to believe the station would resort to syndication or infomercials in those hours. It’s more evidence of the extreme nature of the media’s meltdown.
UPDATE: LaVeille is indeed off tonight, but that could be due to the holiday. I’ve been checking around, hope to hear soon whether there is anything to this rumor.

WBZ Radio….yawn.
2. Celtic Frost | December 30th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
I have been listening to Lovell Dyett since I was a boy! Dig that voice!!!
So sad for folks to lose their jobs at the new year and with an apparently shrinking terrestrial radio pie. God bless. Hope you all land on your feet, like Scott Allen Miller did up in Albany.
3. ChrisNH | December 30th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Lovell Dyett? Oh geez…cue up yet another discrimination lawsuit. I’ll be right there in saying he’s a class act, but if there’s one thing displaced media people know it’s the discrimination lawsuit. Also, what good is being heard in 38 States if all you’re advertising is Bob’s Pretty Good Used Cars of Dracut?

I’m 46 years old and I remember hearing Mr. Dyatt when I was a young kid. Since Brudnoy’s passing I’ve really only listened to WBZ for John Keller’s morning comment and snow reports.
It’s just sad to see these veterans who provide a good service go, even if I’m not a current listener.
Oh jeez, does this mean they’ll cut Keller? Damn.
5. Mitch | December 30th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
I used to listen to Lovell Dyett as a little kid, driving home with my father after attending Sunday night Bruins games. WBZ would follow the Bruins postgame show with Lovell’s program.
I had no idea what Lovell was talking about, but his voice would really relax me on the way home.
I am now a regular listener of the Steve LeVeille Broadcast. Excellent show.
I hope the rumors are nothing
more than that.

They just announced that Morgan White Jr. will be in for Steve Leveille at midnight. The usual protocol for a whacked broadcaster is to avoid mentioning his name. I don’t remember whether he mentioned that he’d be off, but he usually does take time around the holidays.
7. Bob Osgood | December 30th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
I cannot belive this. I understand cutting Tom, local sports coverage is really not required etc. However, Steve, Pat, and Lovell. I look foward to listening to BZ, they provide the best talk in the city. I just hope this is just rumors.
Regards
Bob Osgood

I confess that I don’t listen to these guys that much but I like that WBZ has live, local talk programming on Saturday nights and overnights. I do like Desmarais but I must say that I find Dyette hard to listen to. I know he is an institution but he is not my cup of tea.
9. Cap'n Spackle | December 30th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
11:58 Morgan White Jr: “Steve is under the weather”.
10. LISA | December 31st, 2008 at 9:33 am
Am very sad as I like all of the guys mentioned particularly Steve. Unfortunately though, I don’t listen often to him as it is late night but if I’m ever in the car at night driving home or somewhere I have it on and like it. This is sad if true.
11. BatterDippedFriedClams | December 31st, 2008 at 9:57 am
Guess they ran out of those BZ pens for guessin’ right on Xavier Cugat trivia
12. raccoonradio | December 31st, 2008 at 1:03 pm
Not sure who your inside source is…though I will say CBS did layoff the aft drive guy at WTIC
and replaced him with local news block (if they’d stayed w/ talk and gone syndie they could have gone to Hannity live or even Howie Carr). So far
no confirmation of the WBZ rumor elsewhere online.
13. Rabbot | December 31st, 2008 at 5:22 pm
The lay-offs are all true, unfortunately.
14. Joe from Brighton | December 31st, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Dan Rea’s alright, but WBZ is mostly just the station to listen to at the office during a snowstorm.
15. Vex Morgan | December 31st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
First, nothing should surprise–this is radio. Did anyone not think that certain ‘BZ programming wasn’t on thin ice?
While I’ve heard no hints that he was in trouble, I thought some mornings have been a bit odd.
Like the day last week where Steve L’ claimed to want to sell the “host rights” to the following day’s broadcast (a la Blagoyovich) followed by an absent next day with Morgan hosting.
16. Maureen Mccash | January 1st, 2009 at 12:00 am
I hope the rumours of Steve being laid off are just that - rumours. I really enjoy listening to him, (especially when Mel Simon is on). I find Steve has a very good way about him and he has some very interesting subjects that he discusses. There are very few radio programs that are as enjoyable as his.

Herald:
The latest layoffs hit WBZ-AM (1030) this week. MediaBiz has learned that ’BZ has let go overnight talk show host Steve LeVeille, sports anchor Tom Cuddy and longtime weekend talk host Lovell Dyett.
19. raccoonradio | January 1st, 2009 at 2:30 am
Leveille has disappeared from the WBZ website. A yahoo search for his WBZ pages turns up a 404 not found. He still has his geocities site up, no word of it, but def. off the WBZ site. Dyett is
still listed there though (on drop down menu)(
20. Cap'n Spackle | January 1st, 2009 at 3:14 am
wbz.com -> About Us -> Program Schedule
still lists the Steve LeVeille Broadcast.
21. raccoonradio | January 1st, 2009 at 3:33 am
Yup still on that “Program Schedule” page at least for now, and I stand corrected. But it’s not on “On The Air” (though Dyett is)
22. Cap'n Spackle | January 1st, 2009 at 4:03 am
rr, the “Our Staff” page doesn’t show Steve LeVeille any more. I confirmed that he was once listed there by plugging that URL into the internet wayback machine at archive.org.
23. Celtic Frost | January 1st, 2009 at 8:34 am
Too bad for these folks. At least Feinburg found regular employment, however, as Finneran’s crutch. Finneran is such a tool…
24. raccoonradio | January 1st, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Someone on radio-info said it could be that CBS will do the Tom Kent route–in effect doing a nationwide show for, in this case, its talkers
overnight on weekdays…and it could be out
of KMOX in StL.
post
25. Brighton Boris | January 1st, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Tom Kent is not CBS-owned. He syndicates himself. The new show on WBZ is a Westwood One/CBS-owned show.
26. mojoe | January 1st, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Anyone else having problems with the site?
Navigating from page to page is locking my pc up for a minute or so each page.
27. raccoonradio | January 1st, 2009 at 9:33 pm
Ah, right about Kent
28. Anti Brian | January 1st, 2009 at 9:36 pm
I was sorry to hear about Steve L. Although if I go to bed after 1:00am I turn on Phil Hendrie it was nice to know there was still one station in town doing live local talk in the overnight.
I had the misfortune of working with Tom Cuddy for five years and he is without a doubt the biggest A-hole I have ever met. I really don’t know anyone who has a good thing to say about the guy and he was without question the most disliked person in the entire BZ building. I am not sad he was dumped and will have a very hard time finding another radio job.
29. Eric Bryant | January 2nd, 2009 at 1:12 am
Steve LeVeille’s one of the best talkers I ever damn heard. Maybe sometimes his laugh seems a little forced, I guess, but we’ve all got our quirks.
In my opinion Steve always treated his callers and audience with respect. And it sucks to get laid off like that.
BUT it’s also bad on the the city of Boston. Xnay on local programming.
These people ***need to have*** their cash cow syndication income blocked by stronger federal measures to ensure local broadcasting.
I’m sure the local pols love this kind of thing because it means less local media, and less commentary on their city-hall shenanigans.
We better pair these big media conglomerates down and get more prosecutors like my man Patrick Fitzgerald if were ever to have any hope of saving the quagmire that is MA.
30. BostonPat | January 2nd, 2009 at 5:19 am
‘BZ made a big mistake letting Steve LeVeille and Lovell Dyett go. BIG MISTAKE.
31. edujtnias | January 2nd, 2009 at 5:45 am
I have been a faithfull listener to WBZ for 30 yrs for both the am and pm.If the rumors are true about Steve Leveille I will be looking for a new radio and TV station. I hope WBZ realizes that many people are faithful to the talkshow host they enjoy listening to and they are customers too and will shop elsewhere not only at night but during the day.
32. Sheila | January 2nd, 2009 at 6:59 am
I have been a listener to BZ radio for 40 years. This station has been going down hill at a rapid pace. It’s not what it used to be. The days of Lovell, Carl, Peter Mead, Dave Maynard, David Brudnoy, and now Steve LeVeille, just to mention a few, are no longer. Steve was my LAST hope for BZ. If what I’m hearing is true, BZ has lost another listener. The management didn’t have the “guts” to make advance announcements to its overnight listeners. The process was sly and underhanded. No opportunity for Steve, Lovell or Pat to say good bye to it’s listeners, especially Generossa.
33. Susanna | January 2nd, 2009 at 7:40 am
I was very saddened to learn overnight that WZB plans to eliminate Steve Leveille from their schedule. A caller informed Morgan White, Jr. about this while he was filling in for Steve who had already planned to be out on vacation for several days. If this is true it will be a huge loss not only to Boston area residents but also to people like me who listen via the internet from Connecticut. I have been a fan of Steve’s program for many years and really enjoy the topics he and his callers discuss. One caller in particular, Generosa from Peabody…who is 96 years old…called in this a.m. crying. She is loved by so many people who look forward to her “Friday, Friday” greeting each Friday between 4:00 & 4:30 a.m.
Our local CBS affiliate station in Hartford, CT…WTIC AM…recently let go of some of their staff including multi-talented Diane Smith who co-hosted the morning program. Apparently these are cost-saving measures but the way they went about it was all wrong. Steve Leveille may not even have a chance to say good-bye to his audience…how sad.
34. Andrew Dewey | January 2nd, 2009 at 7:50 am
Seems to me BZ doesn’t need a 50,000 watt signal if they’re broadcasting syndicated stuff.
35. Mike McCaffrey | January 2nd, 2009 at 8:28 am
It is a terrible loss for Steve to be gone. He could make the most mundane of topics become interesting. I do think, he had about run out his string on “cat” talk. I hope they can avoid giving more time to the boring and sometimes vicious Dan Rea. He does nothing for me.
36. Pmfd | January 2nd, 2009 at 8:39 am
What a crying shame that Steve LeVeille was let go! His talk show was the best and I am sure that the majority of the listeners love to hear from Generosa and Claudio. There are tons more great people that call his show. Steve was the driving force to get Johnny Pesky’s number retired, maybe we could get his job back. It’s time the higher ups in this world and especially at WBZ to give up their salaries. What would Paul Sullivan say!!!!
37. Steve LeVeille WBZ-AM 103&hellip | January 2nd, 2009 at 9:21 am

38. Liisa Lambert | January 2nd, 2009 at 10:30 am
I’m so glad it’s over with Steve L.! He just lately seemed to be so uninterested in everything begging people to call his programm. Then came the cat and it was all over. He shouldn’t have brought so many personal things into the air + cutting off people shortly while letting others talk for 15-18 minutes! Something about his giggeling is so weird ! Jordan is the best!
39. Doris Powers | January 2nd, 2009 at 11:50 am
wbz radio is foolish to take Steve off. He was
the only local program that was interesting and
he had a following of local call-ins that everyone
got to know, plus Mel Simon.
40. ann Evans | January 2nd, 2009 at 12:15 pm
too bad if they do let Steve go. i live on the coast of
maine and listen to him most every night, i love his
banter with his callers. i do not understand replacing
him with a syndicated show, if they do I will no longer listen to WBZ at all
41. John J Eldridge | January 2nd, 2009 at 2:54 pm
If its true, and I hope its not, this is one guy thats been a BZ guy for 40 years back to Larry Glick and will now say bye bye to BZ. Steve L. was a people man unlike the (suits) that call the shots he loved his people and was sincere. Mybe BZ should be BS because of the way this was done thats what it is …BS…maybe SCOTTS lawn products can be their logo.
42. dale tillotson | January 2nd, 2009 at 3:42 pm
without steve it probably means wbz will fill in overnights with ronco presents for only 19.99 or george noouary, neither of which is acceptable.
Steve has a great program and should be continued overnite before bz becomes 50000 watts surving uselessly to 38 states and many provinces in canada. Keep Steve and keep bz a station we want to follow.
43. Kristin Hokanson | January 2nd, 2009 at 3:59 pm
The news of Steve being let go is very sad for all of us. The “community” he created through his show helped so many people. His personal care and concern for his callers and listeners made a real difference. Genarosa is a key example of a person he deeply cared about–”Friday Friday” will never be the same.
44. tony | January 2nd, 2009 at 4:01 pm
its really sad if its true about bz’s program change to syndicated format..so many nights I’ve listened when I couldn’t sleep and it really got to be like hearing your friends discuss the issues of the day.my wife was in total shock when i told her this am.it really tears at the fibric of our community.so many local topics, memories, events etc. were played out over the air waves in a way no syndicated program will ever duplicate.terrible decision bz..terrible.
45. sandra hoffman | January 2nd, 2009 at 4:14 pm
I’am from Ohio and I listen at nigh to Mr. Leveille . I think you have mad a big mistake in your move to let him go . I will no longer listen to your station. what a dissapointment
46. Kyle | January 2nd, 2009 at 4:32 pm
I’ve already sent an email to the Program managers at WBZ. I’m not happy with their recent decision. I WILL NOT listen to a nationally syndicated AM talk show. I’ll switch to FM and listen to music again until 6am. I enjoyed listening to Steve. As for his “begging people to call” on Mon & Tue, maybe he knew what was coming and wanted to show the programers at WBZ just how big of an audience they have at that time of the morning. They’ve made a bad mistake. I’m done with BZ now!
47. Chris O'Keefe | January 2nd, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I am deeply saddened to hear that Steve will no longer be on the air. His show is the one thing I look foreward to I believe that this station will lose alot of it’s following includling me. I just don’t understand how they could let him go another sad day at WBZ.
48. Chris O'Keefe | January 2nd, 2009 at 5:34 pm
I am still in shock when I heard that Steve is out. What a sham he is without a doubt one of the best on the radio he truly loves what he does and he makes all his listeners feel important. I for one will miss him I so use to look forward to midnight and his voice and his great stories. Please rethink you decision and bring him back he is the best….
49. Bob Shannon | January 2nd, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Steve Leveille is far to liberal for my tastes. Regardless, I listened to his show every morning. I thought he was very, very good at his job, and he had a following that extended far beyond New England. If he gets a similar show on a competing station I’ll be a listener. I don’t see how eliminating Steve will help WBZ radio.
50. Cap'n Spackle | January 2nd, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Back when the BZ suits did the same thing to David Brudnoy, listener outcry was what brought him back to the airwaves.
Is it possible this generation of corporate weasels could be influenced in the same way? Maybe going after some of the WBZ sponsors like Bill Shay’s countertops or Wildcat Mountain ski area would help.
51. Old Sport | January 2nd, 2009 at 8:35 pm
I am 44 years old and I have seen (or heard) The demise of radio (in general) for years. Satellite radio has not changed my way of listening. I ONLY listen to “free” radio. I no longer listen to any FM, I can cram tons of music on a card and shove it in a player What has changed is radio personalities, WBZ was the last outpost for real personalities. In this day and age of “reality” this and that I think people need to wake up. Steve is real, and now I won’t be listening to BZ any more. I will have to be content with reading a book instead of listening to radio. It is my guess that the upper management needed to decide if they were willing to shorten their vacations this year to save money or cut staff. I hope they enjoy their vacations. Good luck Steve, and bye bye Old Sport.
52. earl bean | January 2nd, 2009 at 9:49 pm
As a CPA i recognize economic tough times.
Before you destroyed the frabic of the
station it should have been sold to local
investors. The overnight show with Steve
made the station different. Advitisers
should be informed that their products
and services will be boycotted as long
as they are associated with WBZ.
53. Jamie | January 2nd, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Complain to the FCC and Congress about how losing these programs is a direct result of their decisions to deregulate media ownership. Speak out against media consolidation to the law makers who can do something about it.
I always listen on my drive home and already miss hearing Tom Cuddy’s sportscasts. Those weekend interviews with the high school kids were great too.
54. Suzanne | January 2nd, 2009 at 9:56 pm
I for one think that Steve Leveille is one of the best overnight host ever. After a bad day I would look forward to hearing his happy voice to cheer me up. What a shame that radio in Boston has gone so far down hill. There is nothing better than live and local radio. I will have no reason to listen to WBZ ever again.
55. Denise | January 2nd, 2009 at 10:00 pm
OK so now the choice will be sydicated programming or paid ads that sound like real shows! Not for me…. After many years with BZ, I’m bailing out. The profits may be great temporarily but the sales and ratings will suffer soon enough. I will not support sponsors of WBZ unless they stand up against this trend. WE do have power and that is how we spend. Boycott BZ sponsors!!
56. tommy216 | January 2nd, 2009 at 10:12 pm
much to much cat talk latley. he bored me
57. Art Tennant | January 3rd, 2009 at 1:08 am
Steve,
Another sad day for radio. We live in a world where the folks responsible for the “bottom line” make reactionary decisions to save their hide no matter how short sighted their actions are. The broadcast industry is the most volatile of all. The corporate leaders didn’t know Steve LeVeille from Steve Allen. The stock holders screamed and they reacted. They don’t care that Steve was a part of a lot of peoples lives.
They also don’t realize that the average population is sick of fist banging right and left wingers and overnight paranormal screwballs. You appealed to everyone. Yes, I could listen all night to people discussing which way toilet paper should be placed on a dispenser. In this world of hatred and misery, I’m the guy in a little town in upstate NY who needs to chuckle at 2 am.
I assume Morgan will vanish with you which means I have absolutely no reason to tune to 1030am.
Steve if you are listening, set up a webcast. We all have computers and your listener-ship would be global. Solicit your own sponsors. You can work from home or even Maine and in your PJ’s! Many, many of us would listen. I’m sure we could even get Generosa set up.
Steve, I hope to hear you real soon again on the air waves or internet. It’s all good. Best wishes to you, your wife and the kitty. -Art
58. kevin a kearney | January 3rd, 2009 at 1:21 am
As far as “The Steve Leveille Broadcast” goes –A HUGE mistake on wbz’s part. One of the few radio station programs that was worth listening to.
59. Madeline | January 3rd, 2009 at 2:31 am
Very sad, I still can’t believe it yet. We’ve been listening to The Steve Leveille show since around the time started the overnights on WBZ. I was a FM music at night listener, my husband started putting it on after hearing at my mother’s house, she listened also. We liked it so much we never turned the dial.
My husband and I say to each other “Friday, Friday” all the time and joke about the show. I really enjoyed it.
Really, what are they going to put on in place of Steve’s show? The colon cleanse infomercial thats on Saturday/Sunday nights? Ugh. Or that awfal Art Bell or whatever the show is called? No thanks.
60. Sharon Edmunds | January 3rd, 2009 at 4:39 am
Steve LaVeille and Lovell Dyett - good luck - good bye. You’re the best. And tell Morgan I heard his Thursday night-Friday morning show. Don’t know how he did it. His sign-off was perfect. He’s aces, too. What a sad day.
WBZ - the gutless wonders. They fired the on-air talent and this listener just quit. Will I listen to the syndicated replacement. No. BZ - 50,000 watts of power and nothing on.
61. jude | January 3rd, 2009 at 10:46 am
BZ late night talk show got me through many long sleepless nights. I will miss the local callers and Steve Leveille broadcast. I will not tune in to a national program on BZ. Who is making these decisions?? Not anyone who cares about the listeners. My best to Steve. Maybe they will bring him back to say good bye!! Can you imagine what that show would be like. There is not much that Steve would hold back on saying to the public and management. JUDE
62. Frank | January 3rd, 2009 at 10:53 am
Sad day for radio. Poor management at best which should come as no surprise. Complete the task and go off the air at night. The sound od radio’s being turned off is deafening!
63. Bob Gray | January 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 am
Can’t believe that WBZ would let Steve go !! I am sure his ratings were sky high. The proof will be in the pudding! Just watch the WBZ night time ratings plummet !!
A faithful listener since 1999
64. Mary Adams | January 3rd, 2009 at 3:39 pm
I’ve listened to wbz - both tv and radio
since I was a little kid. I believe ‘bz was the lst
tv station in the Boston area. I wondered when I
was 4 y.o. when they brought another station
on line “how was one to decide which station
to watch”??????
I am saddened and ashamed as to how
the suits treat people. It seems that you are
here one day and gone the next. What happened
to common decency? The world is indeed in sad
shape when people do not care any longer for
the people who do the work. The big wigs still
make the big bucks, live in their mansions
and fly their private planes.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to all those
who are gone. I do not want a syndicated
show. Who knows the locals???? It was a
pleasure to hear about the Boston weather,
and everything else that was talked about
on the shows in the early morning hours.
SHAME ON YOU WBZ
65. Kman | January 3rd, 2009 at 5:00 pm
I like Steve very much HOWEVER I have been self-employed for 30 years and have been out sick for 4-5 days TOTAL
The reason everyone loves Morgan is because Steve must have been “out sick” 5 days a month
(he “struggled” in around Christmas when his poor throat was sore
It must be the curse of his cat Max !!!
66. Sharron in Maine | January 3rd, 2009 at 6:28 pm
I was never more shocked as I was to hear that the powers that be have Steve go. I agree with the other listeners…no more BZ…
I have listened to BZ for the past 40 years and there have been many nights since my husband died that it was comforting to hear Steve’s voice in the night. He was always well prepared and would make any subject interesting…
Norm Nathan must be rolling in his grave…
This is the end of BZ as far as I am concerned…
67. Pat | January 3rd, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Bad move on WBZ’s part. I have been a steady listener of Steve’s since Jim Panciullo left.
I will no longer listen to WBZ at night.
68. George in N.J. | January 3rd, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Shame on management for dumping Steve L. Been listening to BC for many years because of the interesting talk at night. I will not listen to syndicate trash-talk. Goodbye WBC.
69. Anne in Mass | January 3rd, 2009 at 7:26 pm
I also agree with Sharron in Maine…Steve was always well prepared…and I am sure Norn Nathan has to be rolling in his grave. I have listened to this station for an incredible number of years and to have it come to this…i am also done with “BZ” as well….thank God I have some of all these shows recorded to keep in my memory…I wish Steve, Morgan, Lovell and Tom all the best…I know I am totally going to miss them dearly…they were the best.
70. Chrissy, Julie, Elaine & Martha | January 3rd, 2009 at 11:16 pm
Steve,
We hope your reading these comments and before we begin we want to say WE MISS YOU ALREADY.
You’ve brought all of us many hours of enjoyment thoughout the years. You’ve kept us company during difficult times in our lives. One of us recently lost her husband and you were there while she was grieving. With you gone now, we are all grieving.
We have all been faithful listerners for a combined total of 150 years. WBZ if your reading this, which I hope you are…PLEASE TAKE NOTE. You have lost four faithful listeners.
Steve, we hope to have you back on the air waves again. You are the talk of the town. We only wish you were on the radio so we could call in to discuss this with you.
WBZ…what the heck were you thinking?
71. Lorrie in Swampscott | January 4th, 2009 at 12:00 am
I was surprised by the uncontrollable tears that ran down my face two nights ago at about 4:00 a.m. when I heard Morgan White talking about the possibility of Steve Leveille’s leaving. It felt like I lost a loved one. Steve is an important person for those of us who have to be up at night. I have a toddler that likes to be up at night too, and Steve keeps us company like I can’t explain. I admired his respect for every caller and I loved his sense of humor. He’ll be sadly missed. Shame on you WBZ for not taking some kind of poll to find out his following before you did this. You’re spineless. I’ve been listening for 25 years and you just lost me as a listener in addition to my extended family.

I was driving home from work tonight and tuned into BZ. After the 11 o’clock newscast Jordan Rich came on and made a short announcement about Lovelle Dyette and continued and said Steve’s name. I almost drove off the rode. I couldn’t believe it. I delivered the Star-Gazette newspaper for 17 years before I retired in Jan. 2007. I started listening to Steve in July. 2000 and every single night until last January. I listened to the “Holiday Edition” of Mel Simmons last week like I did for the past 7 years. I googled Steve’s name tonight when I got home to find out what happened and thats how I got here. I still can’t believe it. Very, very sad indeed.

Wow–that’s a blast from the past. Was it “Pansullo” though? I only remember him as a host to “Talking Religion” on WRKO back in the early 80’s. Did Norm Nathan occupy the weekday overnight slot, because I only remember hearing him on weekend overights. Bob Raleigh is the earliest weekday overnight host on WBZ that I remember. BTW, who did overnight broadcasts on WRKO before Coast-to-Coast AM?

Must agree, WBZ, what are you thinking? Bye to BZ, back to WBUR.

I missed that show. What was his sign-off? Thanks.
I can’t add more to what others have already said, except that I’m stunned by management’s decision and unceremonious treatment of area legends.

This is bad news for listeners, WBZ, and the Boston Market. The Radio Industry is imploding before our very eyes. The biggest players are almost worthless and their debt is priced as if its all going to default. This is AWFUL news, but NOT surprising.
The odds are that Clear Channel will go Chapter 11 bankruptcy and Entercom is now a penny stock. This would have been unthinkable even 1 year ago. The situation has gone from “bad” to “complete disaster” in just 12 months. CBS radio is just trying to stay on the air. Talk about a Tsunami.
My question to the folks here who are radio insiders: WBZ is a LEGENDARY POWERHOUSE.
Why couldn’t THEY syndicate a “boston-centric/hosted” late night show and peddle it to other markets??? Its been done at other Boston stations.
OR–why couldn’t Steve L. go it alone and syndicate his own show with a local station hosting him? Thanks in advance!
78. Fran | January 4th, 2009 at 9:38 am
I was truly shocked at the news of Steve’s “ending”. The suits just don’t get it. Imagine not giving Steve or his listeners the courtesy of what was coming. A big disgrace indeed. I consider myself a former BZ listener.
79. Alice | January 4th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Steve will definitely be missed
You have lost a loyal Canadian listener
Not the right way of doing things - you should have given him a chance to say goodbye to all us faithful listeners - he helped many of us to get through many bad nights.
SHAME on all the bigwigs - take a cut in your pay not bring in an outsider
80. Alice | January 4th, 2009 at 10:08 am

NO MORE WBZ for me
I looked forward every night to hearing STEVE not an outsider

So sorry to hear about Steve. I have been a WBZ listener for 15 years. Enjoy Steve very much as well as Jordan on weekends. I think letting Steve go is a huge mistake as he is who keeps the listeners tuned to WBZ during the night. Hope they realized it is a mistake.
BRING STEVE BACK!!!!
82. Glenn | January 4th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
I still can’t believe the news about Steve. I have listened to BZ late night shows for over 50 years and the loss of Steve will hit me hard. WBZ was a late night oasis for unique talk radio … this leaves us with (and 38 states) nothing. Gee thanks WBZ. Satellite radio, here I com.
83. John J Eldridge | January 4th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Well now I know its true. YOU did it. Spineless, gutless, boneless bunch of bodyless suits that pretend to be world beaters and in realality are nothing more than a bunch of boned chickens. This should be called (clucking for dollars) at BZ HD, the HD meaning ( hopeless Chickens). How can you lack the decency and understanding that you demostrated in the animallistic way in which you treated not only your employess but all of your loyal liseners as well? This is what you should do now….change the BZ to BS….contract with the SCOTTS Company and claim to both produce what makes the grass grow greener…….fertilizer. 1030 just left my radio dial……hello TKK and RKO….bye bye WBS

Dear Steve,
Cat and Jim Collins in Douglas, MA want you to know that we think you are the best! The right amount of intellect balance with fluff. We are not big sports fans, but since we are not your only listeners we got sleep when you were on sports. We are both in our 50’s and have had our fair share of bad breaks. We have a son who completed a broadcasting program and seeing what has happened to you and many others is not at all encouraging. We wish you well and hope to hear where your next gig will be, so we can tune in. That national crap is not for us . Live broadcasting a person who is literate to hold a conversation and to be able to wing it is what entertains us. Ranting and raving and screwballs are not why we listen to over night radio. Good luck to you, Diane, and Max .
As for WBZ and their part- timers. They knew what side of their bread was buttered. I caught Morgan 3 times in lies. When I listen I really do listen. My father always told me there was no such thing as a perfect liar because people generally can’t remember that well…I guess with all his “grace” that was his problem. Jordan stuck to his script, so he faired better. He’ll be safe I guess as long as he peddles and panders. So sad that radio is no longer broadcasting, but many part-time pan handlers
86. Holly | January 4th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
I also will no longer tune in to WBZ at night anymore. What a shame.

Its a crime that Steve Leveille was let go at WBZ !!!! He is such an entertaining, knowledgable broadcaster, even his producer Rob (and Mel) added to the show but of course the star was Steve. Steve was one of only a few ANYWHERE that would actually listen to the caller and NOT hang up because the caller did not agree with him. Such a talent, friend to all, soothing friendly voice to be heard at night. He became part of many families only by his voice in their home. We tended to be upset when weekends rolled around as we’d have to wait a couple days to hear his broadcast again. Sunday nights were special as Steve would be back! What are we left with?? Not much!!!!!! Any idea what the scoop is on why/how Steve left? If they (WBZ) were trying to cut costs they should have looked far beyond HOURS and $$. Someone should have LISTENED to Steve’s show and fired/let go someone else – perhaps… someone LESS qualified, LESS talented and LESS entertaining than Steve. In the long run by releasing Steve, I believe far more money and hours will be lost as people will try to follow Steve, abandoning WBZ during his regular overnight shift - and eventually abandoning WBZ completely. Steve has loyal listeners. WBZ should know that by now. That is what is so puzzling - has anyone at WBZ EVER LISTENED to Steve’s broadcast or was the end line just to cut costs? Had they listened…they would have heard a broadcaster who truly cared about the people on the other end of the telephone line and within listening distance of a radio. He connected with people whether it be sports, politics, music, food, Maine and yes even Max and other people’s cats. He connected because he listened too – to his audience, not just a show where the audience listened to the host. He had guests but he did not fill his air time completely with guests who were all his “best friend” as another hosts does. Steve was real on his show with feelings, a heart and a soul. He cared about his listeners and callers. They cared about him. His family of listeners even cared about each other - how many broad-casters would have listeners calling him to ask if another caller was ill as their voice hadn’t been heard lately. His listening audience was a truly a family. Will be lost without him. WHERE is Steve going? Please - Can we do anything to help bring him back? Who can we write/call to complain? (their name / number / address / email address) If Steve can not be brought back, I will follow HIM, not WBZ. WBZ will be the past, not Steve. THANKS for your help.
** If anyone hears where Steve is (another station) - please post it.

Well it is offficial there is no longer that personnel aspect to WBZ, No local talk regarding current issues and items which effect us. No outlet to discuss these or other issues, concerns with an opportunity to review and discuss options.
BZ as we new it is now totally dead.
The station which boasted the best local programming is no longer that. TOO BAD!!!
So Long WBZ!
94. Marj Ingalls / Newbury | January 5th, 2009 at 3:00 am
WBZ is a heartbreaker. The loss of Steve LaVeille and his myriad group of callers on all-night radio seems incomprehensible. Rarely, if ever, has a talk show host shown such interest and respect toward his callers. His own story…the ongoing adventures of the house in Maine, the recent adoption of Max, the drive to the studio in Winter snow…..as if a Garrison Keiller novel half read, and misplaced.
I miss that gentle voice. Best to Steve, Diane, and Max. This is such a loss to me.

I for one am not sad to see SL go..found his show very boring and also very annoying how he pronounced words with ’s’ as ’sh’…ie-shee you later. I know it’s probably just some kind of speech defect but it still drove me crazy.
BZ should bring back old re-runs of Larry Glick…at least he was entertaining.

101. Anne in Ohio | January 5th, 2009 at 8:48 am
I have listened to Steve for the past two years out here in Ohio. I became accustomed to having him there in the middle of the night. I have never been to Boston but enjoyed the sense of community among the listeners and contributors. Boston did not seem like an impersonal, big city because of this show and I would enjoy exploring the area now. I truly appreciated that Steve allowed people more than one minute to express themselves. Good luck Steve.
102. caprinegirl | January 5th, 2009 at 8:58 am
We listened last night because we haven’t Ided a new station or show yet sad to say Jon is across between Bradley Jay and Jordan, but I think that is what CBS was looking for.
I am guessing Steve will be lying low for awhile. You know how those severance pakages go. Let’s face it Steve isn’t going to go out there and make a fool out of himself. His loyal followers will cook WBZ on the wicked hot coals of reality!
Meanwhile does anyone know of a local talk show overnight? Please post.
Look foward to Steve’s return to Media. I do hope it is Boston or Providene
“WBZ as gone local to Loco”
103. John | January 5th, 2009 at 9:05 am
I listened to WBZ and it was DREAFDUL the past couple of nights.
Kim, the syndicated show on Saturday, was telling us how to buy/sell on Ebay. It would have been great information…..in 1999. And it sounded SOO canned.
Then Sunday night–non stop Health infomercials then the utterly unlistenable Jordan Rich (when he has an in-studio guest).
Jordan’s show is an exercise in demonstrating to the listening world a.) his own personal cultural knowledge…and b.) his personal vocabulary.
Jordan is solid with open lines…but an absolute snoozer with guests. I always ask myself “am I being SOLD something?” Jordan is a walking.talking informercial 60% of the time.,
WBZ is making a big mistake. Its looking at costs/revenues. If you look at money that comes in directly due to Overnights, its a losing proposition…
BUT…consider this: there are MANY of us who WAKE UP to the station that goes off with our snooze alarm late at night.
That HAS BEEN WBZ for me for several years.
It will NOT be that way starting tonight. I’m sure I’m not alone. So this will impact AM Drive revenues, which is the most important day-part in Radio.
Sorry you didn’t get what you wanted CBS–spending $1 Million/Year for Glenn Ordway. STUPID!
104. Tom T. | January 5th, 2009 at 9:32 am
It’s about time that nitwit on ‘BZ overnight dot whacked. If I had to listen to one more stupid cat story…not to mention cat owners I think I would hachoked.
Lovell Dyett should have been gone 20 years ago. He is an idiot who wants to pretend he actually has a sophisticated working vocabulary.
Good riddance to both of them!
105. edujtnias | January 5th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Does Steve LeVeille have an email address we can let him know we support him and is there an organized protest out there that we can, as a group, sign in for support and forward to wbz?
If so can you post it on this site so I can spread the word.
106. Bill & Dorothy | January 5th, 2009 at 10:07 am
as a listener of over 40 years, we are sad today. Steve was a true professional and a truly well informed individual. Could talk about many different issues and allowed differnt audience opinions to be heard.
Heard mr Greyson last night, will never hear again.
Tired of all the slick, psuedo intelligence out there….
Adieu Bz I will truly miss you

Let the Program director know of your objection to the layoffs. His name is Peter Casey and his email is peter.casey@CBSradio.com
108. Practical Progressive | January 5th, 2009 at 10:54 am
I’m not sure e-mailing Peter Casey will do a lot of good here. This seems like a mandate from corporate.
The person we should probably registering our objections with is CBS Radio News/Talk VP Steve Moore (Office (314) 444-3286
Email: swmoore@cbs.com).
Moore is also the PD at KMOX in St. Louis, where Jon Grayson was doing overnights before he went semi-national yesterday. A “fortunate” coincidence, I’m sure.
109. mrkleen2002 | January 5th, 2009 at 11:02 am
Steve LeVeille is the salt of the earth, truly. In a world of corporate static and never ending noise, he was a real person that spoke to us every night from the heart.
His show was fun and light when we needed it most, and on nights like 9/11 or election night, he was serious and topical. He reached 38 states, but most importantly it was a Boston broadcast - and the buck began and stopped with what was happening here in New England.
Way back when WBZ was granted their massive license to broadcast as a clear channel station - I guarantee that one of the FCC’s stipulations was that they continue to serve Boston FIRST. This decision is truly mind boggling and will cost WBZ dearly.
I will not listen to WBZ any longer and as some other posters correctly mentioned, when I wake up for work - WBZ will not be on my clock radio…so they loose me for the morning drive as well. From Larry Glick to Norm Nathan to Bob Raleigh to Steve LeVeille, I have tuned into BZ nearly every night. All the is over.
BTW…to Tommie 216 - find the nearest rope, put it around your neck and jump from the closest bridge….being an insensitive doucebag at a time like this is totally uncalled for.

111. Frank R | January 5th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Just tried calling WBZ but I couldn’t even leave a message. Got a recording: “mailbox for Peter Casey is full.”
I live about an hour away from Boston and over the last few years I have become very familiar with the sponsors’ various ads: Mount Vernon Restaurant, Bill Shays, Kantrowitz Attorneys, Commonwealth Associates, Taj Hotel, and on and on. That has to be the goal of any program director or advertising director, right?
But now there is no compelling reason for me to listen.
I thought the Kim Kamando program was just an infomercial: the Saturday program was on tape and I wasn’t sure the callers were even legit since every call seemed to elicit a suggestion for them to go to her web site, which is apparently just an e-store.
I listened to Steve because of the local topics and quirkly personalities. The Grayson format is designed to be the reverse, avoiding ANY local flavor.
I realize that the radio markets must be fiercely competitive, especially now with satellite radio. But I don’t think that the dumbing-down, white-bread approach will help solve any problems of this legendary station.
112. JEANNE | January 5th, 2009 at 11:56 am
THAT IS IT FOR MY LISTENING TO WBZ TALK SHOW AT NIGHT STEVE WAS A REALLY CARING GUY AND HAD A WONDERFUL “WAY” ABOUT HIM. I WILL MISS THE SHOW AND ALL HIS CALLERS! BYE BYE WBZ!

In Columbus Ohio I was able to listen to both KMOX and Jon Grayson and WBZ and Steve LeVeille. I liked them both for their thoughtful discussions and holding their listeners accountable. That being said in hiring Jon Grayson and Overnight America to replace Steve LeVeille, you have lost all the local flavor for not only Boston but St. Louis as well. Grayson may have good intentions but you simply cannot pretend to have a local show when it is covering such a diverse market as Pgh, Boston, St. Louis and Minneapolis. WBZ is a flagship station, 50,000 watts of power, and that power should be for broadcasting local programming. I am tired of syndication. Grayson’s KMOX show is diminished and I miss Steve but isn’t it kind of like what America is these days…one big strip mall with all the same shops in the same order and nothing to indicate whether you are on the East Coast, the West Coast or Kansas. Why do we expect any different from radio….except I do from the big stations like WBZ!
114. Nancy from Auburn | January 5th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
As I sit reading all these comments thinking isn’t WBZ part of CBS??? Isn’t their saying CBS Cares?? My question is Cares about what?? The corner office, the mahogany desk, the 3 pc. silk suit??? When the sponsors are no longer making money from the ads on WBZ, What do you think they will do??? As the old saying goes;
WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND!!!
Goodbye to respect, loyalty and WBZ.
115. Douglas Phillips | January 5th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
REINSTATE STEVE LEVEILLE!!!
The decision to let him go was wrong and short-sighted.
Steve held listeners, …his broadcast lead listeners into the daytime format, …his genuine, engaging style added listeners because the quality of the conversations and the strength of the night signal were so capable of reaching and engaging people from other areas. Steve built the station’s prestige and was a significant component of what made WBZ so special.
Steve always was prepared to discuss any topic from politics to baseball to entertainment to anything a viewer proposed. He listened! …which is very rare among talk show hosts and he always respected his caller’s opinion, even when he disagreed.
Local programming allows a station to connect with its people and to examine local issues for its core audience. There is no way the generic replacement program will ever be able to duplicate that, let alone come close to replacing such a distinguished personality as Steve Leveille.
There are still good people at WBZ, but WBZ has robbed all of the Boston night listeners AND the people of the 38 states and Canadian provinces of a true friend, …of a talent and a source of strength for the station.
The analogy can be drawn that “WBZ had a wonderful restaurant and management replaced it with a Taco Bell”.
WBZ: There is a cost!!! Maximizing the bottom line should not be based entirely on the specific numbers. While late night radio is not the most profitable time segment, neveretheless it is one that provides enormous dividends for a station. WBZ may be saving money in the short run, but will diminish its uniqueness, its distinguished reputation and, in time, its market share.
Former listeners should turn to other stations until Steve is reinstated.
116. Fran from salem | January 5th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
It feels like I’ve lost a family member…someone said it before me but after a stressful day at work listening to Steve was such a relief.
When I heard Jordan Rich’s announcement last night it was like someone had taken a knife to my heart. I tried to give Jon Grayson a listen and be fair but the discussion on “Monkey Meat” was the end for me!
Thank you Steve for keeping me informed on politics, taking away my fears after 9-11, making me a better Red Sox fan, and for always being you.
I was given a prescription for Ambien to help with my insomnia…never needed to have it filled with Steve… but will be using it tonight!
Please please come back somehow. I will no longer patronize WBZ s or any of it’s sponsors!
117. Jim Fiat | January 5th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
I smell incessant greed, don’t you? The removal of Steve LeVeille off the airways
by upper management reeks of incessant greed. The way of our nation these days,
it appears. Yes…you suits…give each other a hardy handshake an plenty of pats
on the back for having saved WBZ from paying not one, but three salaries, and let’s
not forget…benefits too! What an innovative cost cutting move you folks have come
up with! Then…the coup de grace, fill in the vacant radio time slot with national
syndicated sludge. Although I must admit, I’m a bit confused why you exec’s hadn’t
laced the national syndicated radio in with America’s all time favorite listening pleasure
“THE INFOMERCIAL”. It is my sincere hope you all cut yourselves a sizeable bonus at years end for having saved a few pennies in retrospect.
I, like most people have become weary of the torrent of bad news these days. Delivered
to us by both TV and radio broadcasts by the barrel full. It was grand to listen to Lary
Glick, Norm, Bob, and Steve LeVeille….put your head on the pillow, listen and laugh
with them, then fall peacefully asleep. After listening to their broadcast you’d say: Sure
there’s a lot wrong with the world, but look at all those wonderful people calling in to
these local hosts, and then, things didn’t seem to be so bad. That, my dear CEO, VP’s,
and management friends is worth more than any salaries you may have saved! To Steve
LeVeille, thank you, Norm would have been proud of your accomplishments. To WBZ,
I will no longer either watch WBZ TV, nor listen to WBZ Radio, I will boycott all
businesses who advertise on your station, and try as best I can to convince family, friends
and the like to do the same. Like my father always said: “Hit them where it hurts the most…in the pocket book.” I will be scanning the airways to see if Steve shows up anywhere on the dial.
118. Pat | January 5th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
“Isn’t their saying CBS Cares??”
That’s only for their public service annoncements. As for radio and television shows, it’s all business. The Levellie firing was obviously a decision that came from the top since the show that replaced it is syndicated by CBS. I will miss Steve as well as I listened to him occaisionally when I couldn’t sleep.

What the devil is WBZ thinking? Has anyone at the station ever listened to Steve’s program? It’s listeners and callers are like a family. We have listened to this late nite show since Larry Glick and am so disappointed at this decision. Listened to John Grayson last nite. He talked about eating monkey meat ad nauseum, (ugh) and berrated a psychic for forecasting that Obama will have several death threats in the coming year and then talked about it endlessly adding to the very thing he said was dispicable. One man called in to speak about Steve and how much he will be missed and Mr. Grayson cut him off. Great! Last nite was the last time I’ll be listening to WBZ. We will now have no outlet for local discussions. How unfair to loyal listeners. I was tuned in to Morgan on Thurs nite and felt so bad that he was blindsided with this news. When Generosa called crying, I ended up crying with her. This lovely women, I’m sure, has lived for her connection with WBZ. Advertisers will be boycotted and WBZ will be sorry they did this underhanded and insensitive deed to the listeners and to Steve. Bye, bye BZ! Shame on you.
122. mrkleen2002 | January 5th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Tommie216 - you are all wet and clearly haven’t a clue what you are talking about. Go listen to Rush or some other moronic talking head.
Steve spoke eloquently for the entirety of 2008 about politics, the economy, the election - wherever it was necessary to speak about serious subjects, Steve was there and very well spoken.
But in the middle of the night, we dont want to talk about heavy subjects - like Drunk Driving (Jon Grayson’s first topic last night), we want to talk about chowder and cats and music trivia. We want to hear Ramblin’ Dan Martin, Gennorosa, Claudio, Glenn from Brighton - we want our friends with us in moments of loneliness and sleeplessness. Steve was a friendly voice in teh night, and greed and stupidity ahve silenced him.
I am ALL DONE with WBZ radio and TV and will not support any of their sponsors.

Terribly disappointed to hear of departure of Steve and Pat. Listened to them faithfully - WBZ has made a huge mistake.
131. Sean | January 5th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
What was WBZ thinking? The strength of its nights programing was a live host with live callers. I remember the nights of Larry Glick, Bob Raleigh, Steve Laveille, and the weekend host’s like Norm Nathan. These people became household names and each of their shows had something unique. What suite at WBZ took that away from us and our children. Bring back Steve and bring back the other hosts too. Until local radio comes back on WbZ, I won’t be listening.
132. mrkleen2002 | January 5th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
There is always one doucebag in the crowd….congratulations Tommy216 - your it.
Way to look like a buffoon amongst hundreds of people that liked Steve and his show.
Go pound sand.

I’m disgusted at WBZ’s decision to end “The Steve LeVeille Broadcast.” Steve is a talented journalist, who is a true master of ceremonies. As someone who listened to the earlier portions of his show, I always enjoyed his opening monologues. The topics of “The Broadcast” were a perfect balance of topical and light. Although I never called the program, I’ve been listening to Steve shortly after “The Broadcast’s” inception in 1999. I began listening to Steve in my junior year of college and have listened ever since. WBZ has clearly made an egregious decision, and I have no choice but to boycott a station that is not in tune with its diverse and loyal audience. Furthermore, the “shock-and-awe” removal of Steve and Lovell over the holiday season is the definition of disgrace. I’ll be switching to NPR.
134. Daniel | January 5th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
I have been listening to the Steve LeVeille Broadcast since it started in 1999 on WBZ. Last night, I tuned in at around 3:09AM, expecting to hear his familiar jingle, but instead it was some syndicated show. I googled his name and found out that he was let go. How disappointing! I will never listen to WBZ again, BIG MISTAKE, WBZ!
135. J C | January 5th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Here is a copy of an email sent to Mssrs Casey and Moore . Please everyone , speak up and send your thoughts to advertisers and CBS executives!
“I have listened to WBZ for 30+ years. My 17 year old son listens as well. We have each enjoyed the Steve LaVeille Broadcast for its intelligence and lighthearted content and for Mr.LaVeille’s respect for his audience . Mr. LaVeille created a caring community of listeners whose value to WBZ and the Boston community go far beyond the “bottom line”.
We are shocked and saddened by your shortsighted and stupid business decision to let him go. You have alienated two generations of listeners in this family and probably many others. Your decision completely disregards your audience and will undermine your bottom line when listeners are no longer invested in WBZ and advertisers realize that WBZ is no longer the local powerhouse it has been .
The decision to get rid of Steve LaVeille is undoubtedly in the same category as Coca Cola executives’ decision to get rid of Coca-Cola in favor of “new Coke” . Those executives were forced to reconsider their foolish decision based on the ridicule they received from the public. We can only hope that you resind this decision and bring Mr. LaVeille back. In the meantime, you have lost at least two listeners here”
136. gina | January 5th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
mike(#35), glad to hear i’m not alone in finding dan rea boring! not to mention his fake-folksy-yet-morally-superior tone. come to think of it, that’s just the right “flavor” for syndication. bleh.
really gonna miss steve, for all the reasons that have been cited. ‘bz management are idiots, as previously proven w/ brudnoy, w/ whom i often disagreed, but he was intelligent, local, interesting - all the things that the current crop of yakkers are not.
137. RB | January 5th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
This is so sad for anywho who has ever loved radio. Removing Steve has crushed a community. I didn’t listen everynight but when I did, I felt privledged to be eavesdropping on a secret club and I loved it. Steve and his callers sometimes made me weepy, made me laugh, irritated me– just like a close friend or family member. It seems these progressive money saving suits want to erase that priceless human connection, that is not what this world needs.
138. Dave | January 5th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
WBZ…you have messed up real bad. No need for a long “term paper” explanation. Your research is flawed and you will suffer the consequences of a deflated listner base. WBZ…you loose and the air waves of Boston loooooooose…big time!
139. Jeanne | January 5th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
I am very upset about the changes. I heard the “inagural Allamerica ” last night with John Grayson. I hated it. It was so canned I turned it off . I will only listen to WBZ talk radio overnight it if it with a local radio host.

Please , if anyone hears that Steve has moved to another station …let us know at this site. Is 96.9 FM a local talk radio station? I need a new station to tune into. Any ideas?
144. Practical Progressive | January 5th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
And that is why the Salem News did a profile of her a few years back, not to mention that there’s a photo of her on the RadioSteve website.
Wait a minute, I’m sorry, that’s proof she never existed! Its on the Steve LeVeille website and we all know that he’s a great fraud. Not only did Generosa not exist, but Steve didn’t either. . .nor did Lovell Dyett, Pat Desmarais or Tom Cuddy either. They’re all actually alter egos of Jordan Rich. These “lay offs” really resulted from ‘BZ no longer wanting to pay Jordan for the extra shifts and they told him he had to choose one and operate on a reduced schedule. Being true to himself he stuck with the one he knew best.
Its a true story, really. Just like the moon landing and Tommy being Larry Glick’s nephew.
145. Suellen | January 5th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
I have been a faithful WBZ listener for at least 30 years. Steve was one of the last bits of “home town flavor” that was available on the AM dial. He was a God send while my late husband and I were in Indiana after his liver transplant. The station faded in and out, but Steve’s voice and familiar callers comforted us for the three months we were there. We all know that change is inevitable, but why would a company end a show with local flavor and a very loyal following for “McRadio”?
I will be boycotting all WBZ advertisers and I urge those who are equally as disappointed to follow suit. Evidently money is all that matters to this company; it certainly isn’t the community that Steve cultivated.

I have been listening to wbz radio for 25 years. I drive to work early in the AM and have enjoyed listening to Steve L. I actually looked forward to it and miss the broadcast when he is off. When I found out that BZ let him go I was angry. I understand in the economy the way it is that alot of people are getting laid off these days. I think the thing that bothers me the most is that they didn’t let him say goodbye to his loyal listeners. The owner or owners of wbz radio should be ashamed of themselves for the sneaky, underhanded way they went about this! They just lost another listener. Hope your happy!

I was stunned when I turned on my radio last night to not hear Steve. The canned, overnight show was HORRIBLE. Steve was the best! I will find another station to listen to at that hour of the night. Perhaps, some other local station will hire Steve. He will be missed.

Perhaps they need a more “real” hint at Redstone’s home in Newton, corporate in NY and Soldier’s Field Road.
So let them drink Moxie!

Doesn’t the FCC review licenses periodically? Perhaps it would be somewhat helpful to at least go on record with them, stating that listeners are concerned that WBZ is violating their public responsibility by reducing local programming.
Complaining to the FCC probably would not change anything in itself, but it could be embarassing for WBZ to have to confront our concerns at such a serious level.
Their FCC license is their most important asset, and right now one of their few remaining assets outside of a few microphones and some old office furniture! I assume that back in the day, it was the roster of online talent that was the most valued asset of any station, right? I guess things do change!

Steve got me through many sleepless nites during chemotherapy. i cannot imagine that ’syndication’ is the way to go. Now i will change the bedside radio dial and that will cancel out Dan Rea, Jordan Rich and i will listen to a whole new morning news team. If anyone knows where Steve is going or if there is another overnite local talk program, please post. Can you believe a city the size of Boston has to go “syndicated”???? Have we learned nothing from Brudnoy, Glick, etc. etc.

I cannot imagine why WBZ let Steve go. It’s true he got off with the fluffer nutter and the cat a little much, but he is clearly the brightest, best read, all around entertaining guy on late night. He did rant a little but not always and it seemed cyclical…hey, you gotta give an artist some breaks…….no one is perfect and he did alot of good for folks. Bring him back. I hate the syndicated show…BORRRRING.
Steve and Jordan make a great team and have entertained me many nights. As for Lovell, I think he was faking it. Anyway, bring Steve back. No more WBZ for me!!!!
167. Diane Mansolilli | January 6th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

168. Greg | January 7th, 2009 at 6:05 am
WBZ you’ve have lost me !
The people at CBS have badly underestimated. I greatly enjoyed Steve , Jordan and Lovell and late night talk for many years. The late night spot was a institution in New England. The one thing BZ had going for it was a long History late night talk hosts and tradition.
Very sad that it is swept away without a explaination. No 2nd rate Broadcasting is not going to replace the personal repore that was built over many years.
The Callers where has important has the show it self. Go ahead fill up the air ways with more crap about nothing. I’m not listening to your doom and gloom shows.
I still have a brain and a record collection.
A few of us remember what is important in life…. PEOPLE.

BIG mistake by the suits!

My family and I were crushed and deeply hurt to learn that the Steve LeVeille Broadcast was abruptly replaced by “Canned Compost”. I listened to the monkey business and clicked it off. I made another attempt to listen Tuesday, but it was like probing an open wound.
Steve is the best combination of those personalities that aired during the past forty years, e.g. Larry, Norm, Tom and Bob. Keep in mind, that is who we allow into our homes – personalities, not call letters.
In this post 9-11 period he certainly represents an immediate “local voice” with local information and local banter (about same) as we awake from a period of rest.
Please, bring back The Steve LeVeille Broadcast – sooner, rather than later.
171. mrkleen2002 | January 7th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
I tuned in last night for about 10 minutes….and the new host was talking about which fictional characters would be good for President Obama’s cabinet.
DJ Johnny Fever from WKRP should run the FCC.
Seriously folks, the guy actually said that…lol
WBZ is on a very track to mediocrity….long downward spiral. Enjoy the ride.
172. Mary Anne B. | January 7th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
I was amazed to turn on ‘BZ a couple of nights back and hear what I thought was an infomercial. I listened again the next night and last night and I realized that it was indeed a “new” talk host. It was like I was having a really bad dream. I am sure he is a nice guy, but you’ve got to be kidding! How could you have canned Steve Leveille in favor of this mediocre show, the humor is forced and everything feels canned. I hope Steve lands at 96.9 or another station — satellite or internet? We will be listening wherever you go. Getting rid of Steve Leveille was a big mistake. This move, taken together with the mediocrity of BZ’s TV news shows has confirmed that I will no longer listen or watch WBZ. Even Jon Keller is going a bit over the top. All they did last night (6 Jan) on the TV station was hype the “storm” — and Lisa Hughes is ridiculous, she sits there and smirks, shakes her head and constantly moves around in her chair. I don’t know how Jack Williams stands it. The “newscast” is unwatchable. But I always had ‘BZ Radio. Now that’s gone too. Good God, what have we come to! I had switched from listening to the BBC on WBUR (NPR) late at night to Steve Leveille — do you hear me? I had switched from another station to listen to ‘BZ! Well, I am back to BBC and to 96.9 for the rest of my listening and yes, even “RKO! For my watching, it’s Channel 5 and NECN. WBZ, you should be ashamed of yourself.
173. jean | January 7th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
and another thing….. so what if Steve talked about Max the cat all the time? we were family, that is what family does. i enjoyed Max the cat. i enjoyed hearing about Maine and the diner, i enjoyed hearing about his dad’s love of baseball. why isin’t anyone sick of hearing about Gary LaPierre’s retirement? i am so sorry about this management decision. i too, listened twice to the new programming and i was right the first time. no good.

An addition to what I’ve said above: I’ve just been looking on XM and believe me, there’s not a lot of alternatives out there! Steve, get your act together and syndicate yourself, you can get the advertisers. Please! For now, as I said above, it’s back to the BBC. And nothing against the BBC but one can only take so much of death and destruction. I can’t listen to ‘RKO’s overnight, talk about weirdness. Can’t people understand that there are some of us who want to listen to something intelligent, even at night? Jordan Rich is okay, but bland, bland, bland. I don’t really mind Dan Rea but he’s no Brudnoy. Steve is an original and the originals are always better than copies. There’s a saying that we get what we deserve but we didn’t deserve this. And, it may be overstating, but if you read some of the other posts, you realize what a difference Steve made in peoples’ lives, e.g, the woman who wrote in about Steve helping her get through her chemotherapy. Also, it appears that there were more than the over 50s who were listening. So, it was a bad decision all around. Also, interesting comment about the PD at the new show’s station, KMOX, being the Head of CBS Talk. I feel rather naive, but was Steve Leveille (plus the others) really costing ‘BZ/CBS that much? Finally, what about putting together some informal “going-away” party for Steve? Morgan, if you’re listening, let’s get in touch.
179. optimistic | January 7th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
BZ has the right to make their own business decisions; it’s their call. I suspect that the show’s ratings were pretty weak. And I don’t mean the ratings of his loyal followers, I mean ratings as in market share. 38 states and parts of Canada and the same callers week after week. Either very few were listening or an elite few were allowed to monopolize the dialogue which isn’t very inclusive. Which is it? I, for one, am glad it’s over and am optimistic that the new program will be better, which should be fairly easy to accomplish.
180. chicleen | January 7th, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Reading his comments it sounds like he needed a break from the overnight. WBZ needs to get rid of this syndicated garbage and get a live host again. Its so dissapointing to turn on the radio and find real garbage on. They would almost be better off with canned news from cnn. Get rid of radio America and lets get radio new england back. Bring back someone with a pulse. Have you seen what they are doing now between 12 and 1? Reairing Dan Rea’s first hour. Can’t they do better than that? Even WEEI doesn’t rebroadcast their shows any more. WBZ on its way to a triple a radio station. What a shame.
184. Mary Anne B. | January 8th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Okay, so after reading Steve’s comments, I feel a bit better. Will look forward to seeing Steve on a morning gig somewhere — too bad ‘RKO is failing because I can see him over there in the morning. He would be much better than Finneran.

Unfortunately, the web site does NOT include any way to email Steve, but I hope he is being made aware of all our good wishes.

My Mother would bang on my bedroom door as a kid and yell and me for listening to Larry Glick way to late on a school night. After that came the other great WBZ talk show hosts. “To many to mention” When a WBZ host Died, I went into mourning. I felt as if I had lost a family member.I feel that way now. I will never listen WBZ ever again. I will go Satellite radio before I go syndication. By the way I own two Larry Glick University tee shirts.
195. Loco the DX Cat | January 11th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
It’s a very unfortunate and sad day for radio when local talent gets canned in favor of mundane national syndication. This trend has been the norm at small local radio stations that didn’t have a powerful signal like WBZ. However, since the FCC allowed digital HD broadcasting on AM radio, the WBZ signal was significantly diminished by digital interference, no longer covering “38 states and the best provinces of Canada,” undoubtedly part of the reason why LeVeille listenership had been shrinking. Even so, the loss of local talk overnight is huge for greater Boston, something that can’t be replaced by syndication or satellite. (Satellite radio is all syndicated talk anyway - nothing local.) I don’t know where I’ll be tuning in overnight now. Sometimes 680 WRKO Coast-to-Coast AM talk about conspiracies, UFO, and the paranormal can be entertaining, but it’s still not local. I’ll miss the discussions about chili recipes, the baseball and football shows, Mel Simon’s audio trivia with Maine Diner t-shirt prizes, the Mount Vernon jingles, Heavenly Donuts, Friday Friday, and all that was uniquely Steve LeVeille. Thanks to CBS Radio, WBZ Newsradio 1030 is now another member of the vast wasteland of radio broadcasting.
196. Eileen Larry | January 12th, 2009 at 7:51 am
I have been a late night listener for many years and if Steve LeVeille and Lovel Dyett have been let go for the All Night America, I shall cease being a WBZ radio listener. I throughly enjoyed listening to them. By having them as hosts on late night radio, Boston had unique programming that no other host can duplicate.
197. robert mcclinton | January 14th, 2009 at 11:51 am
Shame on WBZ for changing the late night and weekend programming. I’ve been listening to Steve Laveille and Lovell Dyet for years. Their unique programming will be sorely missed.

Bring back Steve! He was a beacon in the night for anyone who had to be up at those hours. I listened to him each day on my way to and from
Haverhill to Worcester Ma. I will miss him and I refuse to listen to a syndicated show from someone who doesn’t know where Boston is!

How sad. Steve, Lovell, et al, were such a big part of our lives in this household. I wish them all well.
They deserve to go where they will be appreciatd. WBZ didn’t.

203. Susan | January 23rd, 2009 at 2:33 pm
I WILL NO LONGER LISTEN TO BZ OVER NIGHT. THE SYNDICATED PROGRM THAT TOOK STEVE’S PLACE IS DULL AND BOORISH. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE..NEW ENGLANDERS WANT TO LISTEN TO NEW ENGLANDERS TALK ABOUT NEW ENGLAND.

Does anyone know what is going on with Steve? I do not care for the program taking Steve’s place and am waiting to find where Steve is. I am really unhappy with WBZ’s decisions. I want to hear local listeners also, and am not interested in out of state chat.

Good News. Steve and Lavell are coming back. Nights just got a little brighter. I guess they heard the unhappy listeners. Story in the Herald

So glad to hear Steve will be coming back. Wish LD and Pat were coming back to their regular spots. Guess WBZ did listen and realized the big mistake they made. Can’t wait for Sunday night. WELCOME BACK STEVE!!

” YES WE CAN ” … and we DID make a difference ! ! ! The phone calls, writing, and emails all eventually paid off.
So great to have our friend return.

Tommy…..do you know what STFU means?
Never mind, of course you do - your wife probably tells you that every day.
Welcome back Steve.

WELCOMEEEEEEEEEEEE BACKKKKKKK!!
You are again…the talk of the town. We knew that you would be back on the air soon.

Thank the Good Lord that CBS/WBZ came to their senses about local overnight talk. I may not be Steve’s biggest fan but I enjoyed listening to his broadcast. PLEASE STEVE, ENOUGH OF MAX!!!
214. Susanna | February 1st, 2009 at 1:26 pm
This is just the best news possible! Of course, it will mean many sleepless nights but it is worth it to have Steve back on the radio. Thanks to all of you (myself included) who called, wrote and emailed WBZ. Generosa will be so happy when she is able to say “Friday, Friday” again this week. Does anybody know which night he is starting? It said Monday at midnight…does that mean tonight (Sunday)????

Live just north of Detroit. Been listenin’ to late nite BZ for years & years. Figured I’d leave the button on the radio set to BZ till the dust settled. Just maybe leavin’ that button set got my main man Steve back on the air. VERY glad he’s back!!
PS: Had I changed that button’s settin’, I wouldn’t have known he’s back.

I listen from Ottawa Ontario Canada every night. I did not understand why management would even consider laying off such a good talk show host. It cannot be all that easy to host at that hour of the night. Steve has a lot of patience with many of the callers that do not deserve it. The fill in show was just that fill in. I also love hearing about Max. I think that some of the management should have been let go.Thaank God someone was smart enough to bring Steve back. Please don’t do this again
