What’s A Million Dollar Entercom Contract Really Worth? WBZ Newsroom Closed?

Backlash Over CBS Radio Cuts Escalating

by Brian Maloney, January 6th, 2009 at 12:06pm

Furious fans of
CBS Radio’s cancelled live-and-local programming are flooding station phone lines with complaints and looking for other places to voice their anger.

Since the removal of several WBZ on-air staffers, including overnight host Steve LeVeille, SaveWRKO’s comment section alone has logged hundreds of complaints, and seen a tremendous surge in traffic. Other sites, including Radio-Info.com, have experienced a similar trend.

And today, fans of LeVeille have announced the launch of their own website, Bring Back Steve, complete with petition demanding his reinstatement.

In addition, according to today’s Boston Herald, local black leaders are upset with the sacking of longtime weekend host Lovell Dyett and want him returned as well.

Finally, the removal of WCCO/Minneapolis host Al Malmberg (connected to the moves in Boston and elsewhere) has fans there hopping mad as well. See the Star-Tribune’s coverage here.

For CBS Radio, these
firings have created a public relations nightmare. None of the canned hosts were allowed to say goodbye and the overnight shift at WBZ, WCCO and KDKA/Pittsburgh is now piped in from St Louis.

Though this may have saved a few bucks for a troubled company, the loss of listener goodwill is incalculable.

People, people: Kill two birds with one stone and get your iPod cranking through your car speakers. Easy and inexpensive to do, and content is free each day from iTunes. Need two hours’ worth of content each day? No problem…it’s there! Hit these radio stations where it hurts by eliminating yourself as a listener. Just think how much happier you’ll be not listening to Gil Santos talk about Purina Cat Chow for a SOLID MINUTE! Or listening to inane chatter from D-list anchors and hosts.

It’s about time the people spoke up……..

You are right, Barbara. I am going to phone in a complaint via telephone right now!

Let’s get a protest march going. How does tomorrow at noon sound?

I can dust off my old “count every vote” and “no blood for oil” signs.

I listened to the new Sat. night show for 10 seconds before realizing it was horrible. A show about computers? Gee, that’s compelling radio.

    meanwhile, on WRKO:

I get the idea the sports folks down the hall are helping to subsidize Howie. I was just listening to
Howie and noticed what was in a typical ad break:

–4 PSAs including Jada Pinkett Smith on “child safety”, “Iris” the IRS helper
–Promo for Howie’s show (We’re listening!)
–PSA for McGruff, the crime dog (identity theft)
–Huzzah! An actual ad –for Carbonite

Then I think one more PSA before the 3:30 news.

A sign of the deflated ad market? I’d hope WEEI at least gets some ad dollars, justifying
Glenn’s salary. And I love hearing Howie but how much money is RKO making on ads
when I keep hearing PSAs? (Oops, there’s an ad–Giant Glass–now another one, Advil…)
    For a minute I thought was hearing a non-commercial station…

And i used to make fun of Air America for running mostly PSAs because they had few advertisers! Smiley

I’m going to get a bunch of white leaders together to try to strongarm WBZ into hiring back Tom Cuddy

  • 7. bjd  |  January 6th, 2009 at 4:14 pm

This might be late because I don’t listen to RKO anymore, but going to howiecarr.com I noticed that there’s been a programming change at RKO.

Somebody cut felon’s failure by an hour and added more Laura. Granted this is a small step forward, but it is non the less a step forward. I must say that’s been the first good thing I’ve seen from RKO management in a long, long time. Good job RKO. Now, about the other 3 and a half hours of that dolt. . .

  • 8. BigBish  |  January 6th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Yes BJD. The Herald alos reported that they renewed the scumbag for another year and saddled him with Todd Fienberg who they fired to give the rapist a show. Makes you proud don’t it?

  • 9. Broadcast Please  |  January 6th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

I strongly disagree with #1’s stance that we must go to iPods and the Internet for our radio. That just hurts the medium (radio) to switch!

lovell dyett can do wtkk saturday nights. its just best of mark levin. cant be worse than jimmy myers on sundays. wtkk can score big public relation points by hiring some of these wbz guys.

I don’t care what happens to WBZ as long as they don’t put Dan Pierce on the air full time. He has filled in for Steve LeVeille from time to time and is just dreadfully lame.

I couldn’t stand him on the air in New Hampshire and I don’t want to listen to him in Boston, either. Let us pray.

  • 12. bob  |  January 6th, 2009 at 7:16 pm

    Big Bish…
I can’t stop laughing!! Go get your bunch of white leaders to strongarm BZ into hiring back Tom Cuddy!! That comment puts so many ridiculous things into perspective!!! Brilliant!!!

Meanwhile, race card aside, Lovell Dyett is a beautiful man as well as a great talent. He “gets it”. Hey Lovell…I love you…I love you madly!!
    And I will miss you.

And I hope the Spirit of New England rises from the grave and places a curse on CBS for doing this! More proof that greedy management/salespeople will never understand the medium they killed because of their lust for money over building a strong listenership.

  • 13. Saxobebop  |  January 6th, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Bob is right, The very people running these stations are so out of touch with the medium its
    amazing.

I’ve been a heavy talk radio listener since 1967.WNBC, WMCA WOR(a few years later)I was 12 then. Every host was live and local all day and into the night.

All the stations had real news departments too.

Some of the music stations like KDKA even switched to talk at night.

Those station owners knew what the audiance wanted and provided the best talent you ever heard.

I’m only bringing this up because I can’t live without talk radio, and it seems as if the stations are so out to kill it.
I’ve watched it grow and really become a force to be reckoned with. How many times did Kerry and Dean and Clinton mention Rush? or Hannity? Its a very powerful medium and they too want it gone.

If I were an advertiser I would want to hit the talk radio audiance WE LISTEN!!! WE BUY!! all day al night,we DX!!

Thanks for letting me ramble. That felt food. I’m ok now.

    I know you all understand.

    Saxobebop.

They say that this economy has chased a ton of money onto the sidelines, where it sits waiting for a place to invest. I say, get some of that capital and take both WBZ (from CBS) and The Boston Globe (from the NYT) local. Can local ownership cure all ills? No. But at least both institutions are in the hands of good stewards.

Apocalypse Whenever, I think you can sleep soundly tonight knowing that the chances of hearing the Pierceing sounds of the man from New Hampster are very slim. If they weren’t using he much when they were doing far more local talk then they are now, what makes you think they would all of a sudden start using him more often? I agree he was hard to take especially when he tried to talk hard core politics at 3:00am.

If you knew Tom Cuddy and he views on women and minorities, it wouldn’t be hard to believe that one could get a group of KKK types up here to protest for him. The guy crawled out from under a rock.

If the minority community wasn’t so busy with Chuck Turner protests they could possibly stage a few demonstrations for Lovell. He is a beautiful man but even without the cuts his time had come and he should have bowed out gracefully.

TKK could score some PR points buy picking up some of the BZ talent off the waiver wire but aside from some fill-ins or possibly a Saturday morning shift I don’t see it happening.

  • 16. Apocalypse Whenever  |  January 7th, 2009 at 12:48 am

    Anti-Brian,
The reason I am wary of Dan Pierce finding his way on to the air full-time at WBZ is because I know the way he operates. He is one of those guys who is willing to work for next to nothing just to hear himself on the radio.

I have seen it with him before. He’ll come crawling in under the cover of darkness, he’ll get an overnight shift and then, before you know it, he has finagled a day shift out of it and we are stuck with him for years. Take it from someone who knows, I’ve seen him work his “magic” before. The management loves him because he gives them absolutely no trouble and will work for peanuts. Also, he apparently has a buddy at WBZ who has been giving him the fill-in gigs for LeVeille all along, so it is not beyond the realm of possibility that he could be buttering up the management even as we speak. It is the middle of the night, after all.

Apocalypse Whenever I hope you are wrong about Dan Pierce coming to WBZ. I remember him at WGIR in New Hampshire and it was not good radio. He had very low ratings and it was widely believed that he was able to hold onto his job because he was also the Program Director. (Not exactly like he was ever going to fire himself for low ratings)

He quit in a snit as I remember because he fired a popular morning show host and then couldn’t stand it when the backlash over the firing became ugly.

Caller got on the end of Rea’s show tonight wondering what Rea’s exact hours were; he was told
when there’s no Bruins game, live Rea 8-mid. with a reply of the 8 pm hour at mid., and if there
is a Bruins game, Rea stays till 1 am. “The less of ‘Gruesome’ the better–that’s what I call
Grayson,” the caller said. “He is horrible.”

  • 19. Celtic Frost  |  January 7th, 2009 at 7:18 am

I’d love to see Lovell Dyett replace Jimmy Myer on WTKK. From our SAT days:
    Lovell:Jimmy as NYC:Hooterville.

Besides, isn’t Jimmy supposed to be the keeper of the flame for Reggie Lewis and Donna Harris-Lewis? How can that possibly leave Myer enough time to do a part-time talk show on WTKK, anyhow?

  • 20. the real Barbara  |  January 7th, 2009 at 9:02 am

Celtic……..Besides, isn’t Jimmy supposed to be the keeper of the flame for Reggie Lewis and Donna Harris-Lewis?…….

    Excellent!

Satellite radio is better than the IPOD IMO. Just turn it on and it’s there. No need to download anything and plenty of variety. Music stations are commercial-free.

  • 22. ChrisNH  |  January 7th, 2009 at 10:33 am

Jimmy Myers is your prototypical ABM…unlistenable; always ‘outraged.’ The fewer watts given to his voice, the better.

  • 23. Mega Therion  |  January 8th, 2009 at 10:00 pm

Sadiki Myers was the self-anointed “Keeper of the Gate”, the grand declaration made at Lewis’ funeral in August of 1993. A true buffoon, and a leech. Myers now buddies up with a disability scam firefighter who partakes in body-building. Very odd.

And the gate keeper was asleep while Will McDonough and then the Wall Street Journal got to the bottom of Lewis curious heart ailment..sniff.

    To anti_brian;

    You said:

“If you knew Tom Cuddy and he views on women and minorities, it wouldn’t be hard to believe that one could get a group of KKK types up here to protest for him. The guy crawled out from under a rock.”

Where the hell does this come from? Do you even know this guy, or do you just make this crap up to support your position?

I know him. he’s alot of things, but racist ain’t one of em’.
