Thou Shall Not Upset The Empress
by Brian Maloney, January 7th, 2009 at 04:27pm
According to Jessica Heslam in the Boston Herald, a Cambridge man is facing criminal charges after threatening WEEI’s Dennis & Callahan, The Empress and Coffee Boy:
The first voice mail was left for Kahn on Oct. 29 when Banner complained of Dennis and Callahan’s support of Republican candidate John McCain, according to court documents.
“…the next time Gerry Callahan laughs in somebody’s face with his snide, snickering laugh, I’m gonna come in there and kick his (expletive) teeth in. And then I’m gonna look for you and kick your (expletive) teeth in, you (expletive)….you can tell (expletive) John Meterperel when he makes fun of people to look in the. . . (expletive) mirror. (Expletive) you.”
In an Oct. 30 message for Kahn, Banner allegedly said, “Shut Callahan up. Talk sports in the morning. You sleazy, dirty (expletive, expletive expletive).”
Banner left a message for Dennis on Nov. 4 and brought up the 2003 Metco scandal when Dennis and Callahan were suspended two weeks for comparing an escaped gorilla to minority students who take part in the Metco program.
“You and your Klu Klux Klan partner should talk sports you (expletive, expletive). And the next thing too Dennis, when you talk about somebody’s look, look in the (expletive) mirror you donut-eating mother (expletive, expletive) sucker. You and your (expletive, expletive) daughter, die you son of a (expletive).”
The final message was left for Kahn on Nov. 4. “… And every morning when I listen to the show, I just say, jeez, maybe tomorrow I wake up and hear that Jason (expletive) Wolfe and Julie (expletive) Kahn died. That would be my wish, for you to (expletive) die.”
What made this guy stand out above and beyond all of the other threats directed at Entercom Boston on a daily basis?
At this point, it must take quite a lot to attract their attention.

Too many kooks in this world too take this clown seriously.
That said about Julie the dude crossed the line, lesson learned don’t drink and dial!
Does she fear sharing the halls with a Felon everyday that threatened Howie Cars Life? When will she call to report that?

Carr’s

Don’t worry Julie, your Coffeeboy’s got your back.
By the way, is there anything the felon can’t do while in your employ?
Why does Felon Finneran get away with issuing a death threat to your only WRKO talent, Howie Carr?

so much for Cambridge being a hotbed of pacifists……..

Ahh, the “Tolerant Left”.

So Brian, nothing should have been done?
BTW, I can’t stand D & C…still, certain things cross the line. Brian, you got to admit it.

Is there a course at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting that teaches young’uns how to deal with this sort of thing? Truth be told, there are a ton of people like Banner out there. Why do you think D&C make so few public appearances (aside from John Dennis being mistaken for an undertaker)?

You are missing what’s really happening here. This guy is not threatening them, he’s setting himself up as a prospective employee of rko. He’s building his record or resume as the case may be. Seriously, how much longer will uncle tommy pollute the airways before he’s finally pulled? They’ll need a replacement. Who better than this guy? rko management will have first hand experience of his talent.
After your suit, please send your rap sheet and salary requirements to me at rko in Boston. I think we’ve got a winner!

Dennis and Callahan are elitist bigots who appeal to the baser instincts in the listeners.
Their credo is “I’ve got mine, f— you”.
Compassion is a word that would choke either one of them if they had to use it in a sentence with the first person pronoun, unless it were a sentence like this:
“I have compassion for the guy who inherited daddy’s business and built it up, and now they want to raise his taxes to make sure the middle class doesn’t disappear.”
“The middle class is all burger-flippers and janitors now, isn’t it, JerrY?”
Fuck these guys. They never met a break for the rich, or a kick in the face to the poor, that they did not like.

I hope they throw this kookburger in the can for a good long while. I think it is pretty well established that I’m no fan of The Empress and the Coffee Boy but I draw the line at criticizing their management skills (or lack thereof). When you start threatening a woman with violence, you get your ass thrown in jail, in my opinion.
I think after Mr. Voicemail Tough Guy spends a couple of nights with some real tough guys in jail, he’ll think about twice about running his mouth.
A word of advice for Mr. Banner: “Pretend that you are playing goalie in a hockey game and be sure to cover up that 5-hole!” Yeow!

I agree with my man Staffer. This is too over-the-top to ignore.
And exactly the reason that you should go to a registration-only format, Brian. I use an anonymizer to shield me from potential nutjobs like this. BTW, I didn’t know JSYK had access to a telephone from McClean Hospital?

I think what Brian is doing here, Staffer, is point out the hypocracy. The Felon (who’s a** should be in jail in the first place) threatened Howie Carr multiple times on the air and still has a lucrative job. This guy, while he definitely does deserve jail time and is more over-the-top than the Felon’s threat, is suddenly a problem. Why him as opposed to all the other hate mail that people like D&C and Howie get from the “tolerant left”? Is it because the threat was directed at the Emperess? If that’s the case then she’s really a piece of work.

Mike,
“she’s really a piece of work”
Better call you lawyer and don’t answer the door until he gets there!
When the cops arrive say “I meant to say lock Howie in a trunk” that should get them to go away.
Going forward - be careful…

What you people don’t understand is that this IS how you get on the air at rko. We are paid by the state for hiring felons, fools, and those “special people”.
So programs really are not that good, the news stinks, and a lot if airtime is infomercials. We’re still getting paid by tax money for helping these “special people” be useful, productive memebers of society.
We keep Carr on the air as a token. We haven’t seen a criminal record from him yet. If we were to air only convicts we would open ourself up to lawsuits.
Keep watching rko’s web page for the new show. We’re very close to reaching a deal!

BostonVernon:
Thanks for the warning. I’ll keep my lawyer on speed-dial.

Such bluster may come with the territory when you’re an all-sports station. WCLV-FM in Cleveland (ok col Lorain.OH) offers a fairly good classical music format (better than WCRB by a light-year!) and a message board. Recently, one person left a post that was not kind to station management, and Robert Conrad thanked the person for his opinion. Needless to say, nothing like what happened here.
17. BostonVernon | January 8th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Our opinion is not sought after or paid attention to.
Recently RKO had customer focus group sessions which I’m sure they ignored,They responded by keeping the Felon and hiring the rapist.
Sounds like the Empress is a threat to the community. Is there such thing as a “class action community arrest”?
18. Celtic Frost | January 8th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Laurence, I agree somewhat with Dan Shaughnessy that ‘EEI is “nitwit radio.”
19. WRKO Staffer | January 8th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Making a phone call to someone and saying they should die makes this another situation all together. This is the behavior of creepy shut in types (check out the Eric Bogoasian film “Talk Radio”).
To Mike, yeah, the Felon’s “threats” to Howie were stupid but they weren’t anonymous threats of hoping one would die. They were cartoonish and Howie played it as long as it could go (which wasn’t too far). The two can’t be compared really.

Let’s be honest…the “anti-Semitic” stuff is what crossed the Rubicon.
