Radio’s Lost Decade The Felon’s Biggest Worry: Howie Carr!

One Morbid Day (Updated)

by Brian Maloney, June 25th, 2009 at 04:54pm

*** NEW AT EQ: Leftists Complain About Jackson Coverage, But See Smear Potential ***

**** ATTENTION WRKO MANAGERIAL NUMSKULLS: DUMP THE SOX PREGAME SHOW AND GO WITH A NETWORK FEED ON THE JACKSON DEATH! DO WE REALLY NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY? IF WE DO, IT’S TIME TO FIND A NEW CAREER. ***

Though I’ve never
been a big fan of Howie Carr’s death pool, there are days like today when it pays off. In a morbid sense, that is.

Now, with Michael Jackson’s
passing coming right during his program, it’s all death, all the time. The Irish sport pages, live and on the air.

Actually caught Howie wondering out loud whether Farrah Fawcett’s passing could be milked for one more segment, but I’m guessing The Gloved One put that dilemma to rest.

UPDATE:
some media outlets are holding off for now on reporting Jackson’s death.

UPDATE:
TMZ had it right all along- some networks were led astray by reports that he had gone into a coma. It now appears he was dead from the time paramedics arrived. Live BBC coverage is available here.

UPDATE:
The Globies report some Boston-area stations have switched to Jackson songs in remembrance of the King of Pop.

The passings are very sad. Did Howie Carr mention veteran Philadelphia-radio radio talk show host Irv Homer passing away? He just died, as well.

*** BULLETIN *** …………. Jeff Goldblum is NOT dead. NOT. Dead.

  • 3. Joe from Brighton  |  June 25th, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Dan Rea did a great show tonight on Michael Jackson. WBZ is Boston’s talk station after 7pm.

  • 4. raccoonradio  |  June 26th, 2009 at 2:32 am

Phil Hendrie mentioned that the Goldblum death rumors happen every few years….as for WRKO the mighty Sox contract means John Smoltz’s debut is more important –though as was said on Facebook there prob is a provision for Breaking News. (What…”tune to 93.7 to hear the Sox game”? Speaking of which, the pre-programmed Mike FM had just about no MJ which I guess was a comfort for those who were tired of his music
    already.)

So Howie, did anyone have Jacko in the death pool (delayed till tomorrow or Mon.)?…As I said elsewhere, given his poor health and prescription drug abuse I predicted Michael
would die within a few years…

  • 5. Rich  |  June 26th, 2009 at 8:28 am

Howie was actually clairvoyant during the first hour yesterday. He said that he wanted to hold off on a new death pool for a couple of days (after someone won with Farrah) because “these things tend to happen in 3’s” (McMahon and Farrah). About an hour later, the news broke about Jackson.

The Jackson coverage is another sign of the imminent decline of our culture lead by the media bubbleheads. The coverage was way over the top and perfect camoflague for the “re-making” of America that is going on. Jackson was a self indulgent fool who could sing and dance. He never helped anyone or a charity despite his selling 750 million records…The Death Pool is an indication of the “Lost Decade” of local talk. Howie’s program has sunk deep into the mud. Let’s hear the stories again about how he would have been a great AM drive time host. Howie is lucky he never read his RKO contract which now allows him to blabber for 4 hours and get paid for it.

Leftists are loving this. It completely distracts attention from the Cap & Tax and Socialized Medicine disasters that they are determined to inflict on us ASAP. Nobody reads the bills anyway and now they won’t even be on the front page!

  • 8. Circlet Soft  |  June 26th, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Jean, yeah we progressives always love it when people dieing contributes to our political agenda.

    Are you for real?!

  • 9. raccoonradio  |  June 26th, 2009 at 1:19 pm

ObamaCare mighta saved Jacko :) (HA!)

  • 10. NHradiofan  |  June 26th, 2009 at 6:37 pm

I’ll bet Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina is the happiest man on earth.

Michael Jackson’s death has totally erased his Argentina trip from the news.

Reminds me of Rep. Gary Condit - he was top of the news………….until Sept. 11, 2001

  • 11. piratetoby  |  June 26th, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Jan, here’s something that should be inflicted upon YOU asap….a dope slap for posting something so incredibly stupid.

  • 12. Sorenson  |  June 26th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

    pirateboy

What is stupid is YOU getting on someone for pointing out that this stupid country is more interested in “pop” culture than they are vital news stories. They [real news stories] just slip by unabated during such events [Jackson departure]. The media in turn invites all of America on a long junket of mental masturbation on such as the Jackson death, after which they sit slack jawed trying to utter “where was we?”

  • 13. piratetoby  |  June 26th, 2009 at 9:24 pm

    Sorenson,

“What is stupid is YOU getting on someone for pointing out that this stupid country is more interested in “pop” culture than they are vital news stories.”

Well, you must be stupid if the above is how you interpreted my post. I agree this stupid country is more interested in pop culture than vital news stories.

Jan stated it was “lefties” not the country, in relation to one very specific current event, rather than real news/pop culture IN GENERAL.

That being said, the passing of Michael Jackson is more than pop culture. It is legit news.

  • 14. Sorenson  |  June 26th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

    “It is legit news.”

If all things were as it should be it would be but a tid bit of news. Back page. Final moment mention in a news broadcast.

*1 child dies every five seconds of starvation in the world. Whilst I type, a few breathed there last breath.
*In contrast 1 million kids a year die of eating disorders in the U.S.!!
*life expectancy of males dwindles in cities ridden due to gang violence.
*multi generations in families in the U.S. are jobless.
*knocks on the door mean is your gas or electric being shut off today.
*little kids are being orphaned by the thousands as we speak as a result of aids in Africa then are left to wonder around completely vulnerable.
*whilst our pop star dyes his skin white.

Death of 50 years old Maladjusted predatory king of materialism i.e. pop = legit news? well, I guess you could say he was a mirror to our sick culture and so we should look? That we do! We sit as a culture in a complete stupor accepting the medias pop culture soft porn pushing of death by materialism [alla Jackson] ad nauseam!!!! Who wins here? Did you ever stop to think of that? Whilst we are all lulled into pop culture glutenous ignorance, who wins?

    ‘gluttonous’

  • 16. Circlet Soft  |  June 27th, 2009 at 5:38 pm

I am bored of this topic. But I do feel a sadness for Michael Jackson, despite his manifestly flawed character.

  • 17. piratetoby  |  June 27th, 2009 at 5:48 pm

I’m bored as well, and pretty much sick of hearing about it. Who cares if it was Demeryl or Morphine? He overdosed.

Anyone with a heart or even a smidgen of compassion must understand how truly sad and tragic this man’s life was.

I’m not minimizing what he was accused of doing. He was sick. Deep down he most likely hated himself. Drugs keep that self-loathing at bay.

Sadder than sad. And I hope he can now FINALLY rest in peace.

  • 18. ChrisNH  |  June 28th, 2009 at 7:33 am

Five minutes after being shocked at Jackson’s death at age 50, people started wondering why he didn’t die at age 40. The amount of medical maneuvering to prop up this rather ‘plastic-looking’ person was astounding. That he even made 50 years was the real story.

  • 19. X-TKKER  |  June 28th, 2009 at 12:25 pm

When is someone going to pick Howie for his own death pool?

  • 20. Chris  |  June 28th, 2009 at 12:53 pm

These aren’t good days to be 50 years old. Pitchman Billy Mays was 50, too.

  • 21. Charlie  |  June 28th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

    Reality Check:

Michael Jackson, while a talented performer, was a child molester.

Yes, found not guilty - but to listen to his own statements about how he had little boys in bed with him, how they showered naked together and how he fed them “Jesus juice” (wine) can lead to no other rational conclusion.

The cases that didn’t go to trial were settled out of court. The victims’ silence was bought and paid for.

So while I don’t wish death on anybody, let’s not get over sentimental about the legacy of this pervert who damaged untold lives in ways that may never be understood or healed.

In death, MJ will finally be called to answer for his abhorrent crimes - and in front of the ultimate Judge.

Let him moonwalk there and see how it goes over.

  • 22. Hoss  |  June 29th, 2009 at 8:35 am

Wait, wait, wait, you wanted them to stop playing the Red Sox game - something they’re contractually required to play and that actually brings in an ailing station money - to talk about something that EVERYONE ELSE is talking about?

Brian, I agree with you a lot more often than I don’t, but this is crazy talk. I think you’re just looking for things to criticize WRKO management about.

  • 23. raccoonradio  |  June 29th, 2009 at 10:05 am

It’s true, they do have to honor the contract. Just like sometimes when WEEI (usually) has to run a tape delayed version of a sport that isn’t as popular, one where people run up and down a field for 90 minutes or so and if you’re lucky someone may actually score a goaaaaaaaaaaaaal!
Gooooooooooooooal! (I wanted to hear some sports talk on EEI after a Sox game on the road, and got the Revs instead.)

As for Jacko being news, it’s what people are talking about at the water cooler, so they say.
Once they get bored the subject gets switched.

Once upon a time this blog was entertaining.

    No more.

Pirate, Stafer, Pat Lucci: shall we just kick Brian’s behind and take over his blog?

  • 25. Cap'n Spackle  |  June 29th, 2009 at 9:31 pm

In the brief moments that I had on MM’s program tonight during Sox ad breaks, I heard her use the term “antiquitated” at least twice. Some of that swell post-Garrity edjumukashun at work, perhaps? I wonder if she listens to Bo Dietl’s appearances on Imus and doesn’t realize the extraneous syllables are part of his shtick?
Don’t get me wrong; she’s always better’n Michael Sausage and depending on the topic can be a more interesting listen than D-Rea.

  • 26. Sorenson  |  June 30th, 2009 at 9:45 am

    I agree spackle.

Even with a wounded shtick MM beats out the others.

Savage well is like a snarling schnauzer snapping at the air pulling against his leash. His rights and freedoms should be protected yes but his show is like strong snuff. After awhile the passive user just throws-up.

D-Rea treats his audience as it they are reporting to the principals office. I wonder how long people will mistake his passive aggressive power trip for “low key” etc. And then when it gets really funny is when he tries to kick it up a notch and plays like a shadow behind a veil. Hilarious, passive aggressive feigning “low key timid aggressive” lol How complex these prima donna’s are. rotflmao!

MM is just that: MM. You can hate her or love her but you don’t have to guess at it. Her strength is in her sovereignty. I hope tkk gets it!!

  • 27. piratetoby  |  July 1st, 2009 at 11:46 am

    Sorenson,

“Her strength is in her sovereignty” ??????

    Explain, please.

  • 28. John  |  July 1st, 2009 at 5:32 pm

    Brian,

You are so wrong on this post:
“ATTENTION WRKO MANAGERIAL NUMSKULLS: DUMP THE SOX PREGAME SHOW AND GO WITH A NETWORK FEED ON THE JACKSON DEATH! DO WE REALLY NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY? IF WE DO, IT’S TIME TO FIND A NEW CAREER.”

Why would a station dump the Red Sox pre-game, which brings in close to $200,000 in ad revenues to go with network coverage of a guy whose fan base isn’t even in the demo of the target audience.
Also, in case you weren’t noticing. Every other station was carrying Wacko Jacko news. Problem is, there is no news. He died. At the time there was no formal information other than anchor talking heads interviewing people about what Jackson meant.
Stick with the Sox Pre-Game, take the cash and counter program.

Stick to blogging….no wonder you don’t work in radio anymore

  • 29. susan mcbride  |  July 7th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

I cant stand this stupid Michael Jackson sob-story on tv 24-7.

do you think some small asian country could launch a surprise attack on some place….like…….i dont know……..like hawaii?

  • 30. susan mcbride  |  July 7th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

    ridiculous!!!! it could never happen!

  • 31. whatever  |  July 7th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

    susan, are you talking to yourself? (-;
I had no interest in the MJ stuff. I was a Jackson 5 fan as a kid, after that I had no interest in MJ or his music. I will admit to being facinated with the Princess Di’s funeral for some odd reason though.
