Ready To Tear Howie Apart?

Inside local media circles, there's an increasing sentiment that Entercom's mob-style public rubout of longtime WEEI morning stars Dennis & Callahan a few days ago was also meant to send a blunt message to Howie Carr: don't mess with us, or we'll ruin your career as well.

Over at Radio-Info, poster BrightonBoris (who has seemed fairly pro-Entercom in past comments) weighs in with this tough assessment:

The Howie thing is not going to get wrapped up by October 1st. That's a given. Entercom is not his fan anymore. Look at what they just did to D&C. Absolutely humiliating. And, these guys were their top guns. Howie is just a fat servant boy.

They're salivating over an opportunity of taking him apart in court. And they'll probably win if Howie keeps opening his big piehole in Heslam's columns. His agents/advisors are just as bad as D&C's, if not worse.

I am sure there's a contigency clause in the offer they signed that protects Greater Media in case he can't start at 96.9 within a reasonable period of time. You know Graham is not the future. And it's not so much the weak adveritisng situation as their undying love for AARP talk show host of the year that would make it easy for them to move on if Howie's mess gets messier and Imus is back in syndication. I suppose D&C could also be available for pennies on the dollar by then...

Keep in mind there's at least a small chance Boris is an Entercom insider. I've certainly wondered that in the past. Just how nasty is the company prepared to become?

I think Howie is a different breed altogether. The guy has been playing hard ball in this town for some 20 + years. He knows all about dealing with mobster tactics. The guy is a survivor and certainly not intimidated by an out of touch corporate giant and the local lackeys who do their dirty work.

I find it interesting that the Colonel is back in for Howie this week. It seems to me that if the station were preparing for Howie's departure, they'd start putting some people on as try outs. Instead, we get a friend of Howie's. I don't know what to make of that.

Good observation. The reason is that Entercom has a history of being reactive and vindictive rather than proactive.

If you were running the place, of course you'd be looking around and trying out new people, but these guys are too busy trying to beat Howie in court to plan for the station's future.

Plus, you can always torture listeners with another six months of Senator Hedlund! That will fill the airtime!
