Will Howie's WTKK Start Date Be Delayed?

At the moment, that's a very good question. Based on a best-case scenario, Howie Carr is scheduled to leave WRKO in September and kick off his WTKK morning drive program on the first of October.

Unfortunately, as the legal battle between Carr and Entercom shows no signs of a resolution, it now seems likely he will face an extended off-air holiday.

While I certainly wouldn't claim to be a legal expert, it's just a matter of common sense that once Howie is in the door at WTKK, it's going to be a lot harder to get him out of there. If he can be prevented from ever taking to the airwaves at WTKK, Entercom might feel it has a better chance of prevailing overall.

Did last week's pow-wow between Carr's camp and Entercom's suits represent a real effort by either side to resolve the case, or did it take place so that both parties could say they'd acted in good faith? As I see no sign of a resolution anytime soon, my money's on the latter.

Howie has got to be giving some serious thought to moving his base of operations to Palm Beach, Florida. All he needs is an ISDN line (hey, it worked for Jay Severin broadcasting his "local" Boston show from Sag Harbor, NY) and he will be all set.

He can do the morning show from a home studio and never set foot in Massachusetts again. He has threatened to do this, albeit in a joking manner, many times in the past. If his legal argument against WRKO prevails, he might just wind up talking to us from the beach with one of those fruity drinks with an umbrella in it in his hand. I'll still listen. Howie at the beach is better than the Felon in Boston.

Broadcasting a show from Palm Springs wouldn't be such a wise move by Howie. His bread and butter are local political issues. He needs to stay sharp and on top of local matters. I'm sure he'll have plenty of Palm Spring vacation days written into his contract.

The first step in recovery is admitting their is a problem. Despite the best efforts of the listeners of WRKO and this blog, it appears that all is lost.

The corporate trolls from WRKO post small bits, and try to say, like the solider at the end of the movie "Animal House" that "All is well", but it's clear that it's not.

No matter how hard the listeners and bloggers try unless WRKO admits it, the station can not be saved. It almost seems as if the station is now hell bent on either keeping somebody that wants to leave working for them, or is going to use the "scorched earth" policy and destroy somebody that is not happy at WRKO any longer.

I can imagine how my job performance would change if my employer would not let me leave and forced me to work for them. My employer wouldn't like my performance, but I certainly would have fun!

Maybe the blog should be changed to “triedtosaveWRKO.com”.

My pick of WRKO in the Death Pool looks better all the time.

Yup, better than the Felon! WRKO should change its call letters to WHAK: Hack Radio for Boston. Wolfie will replace Howie with a retired politician. Mike Dukakis: Tanned, rested, and
ready.

I honestly don't think that would work. Howie succeeds because he talks the local talk and because he stays connected (or at least gives the impression of being connected). I think a successful radio host becomes an unsuccessful one when they disconnect themselves from the people they are talking to and talking with. Has Severin 'disconnected' himself from his audience by having a huge 'elite' mansion on the sea, and by taking long stretches of time off? I can't say for sure, but it's a worthy theory.

Carr needs to take stock of what makes him a success and make sure he stays on the fence with respect to that (and not fall off it like Severin has).

Upon further review, I must agree that Howie would have to remain in Boston rather than try to do the show from long distance because of the need to be truly connected to local issues, but the thought of Howie sticking it to WRKO while sitting on the beach was too good to pass up.

With that being said, does anyone else see a delightful Fall and Winter on morning radio? I think we might see some new wrinkles from Howie as he uses a superior guest lineup and a far better signal on WTKK to crush the Felon's image as a political insider.

I will be pleased to see Howie dismantle the Felon's Forum and I predict that WRKO will become so disillusioned that the Felon will be shown the door and Don Imus (who, by then, will have worked out a new deal to get back on the air) will be brought in to do battle with Howie.

Howie on 96.9 and Imus on WRKO - would you have even considered such a thing 1 year ago ?

bjd: "Maybe the blog should be changed to “triedtosaveWRKO.com”."

That can be done. All Brian has to do is move the blog to wetriedto.savewrko.com.

Changing the name is still an option down the road, but I still see symbolic meaning in the "SaveWRKO" name. There's a bigger fight: it's about retaining the few remaining opposition voices against one-party rule.

Posted by: Brian Maloney at August 20, 2007 07:37 PM

The voices against 1 party rule will still be there, just on a better signal on the FM side. (Maybe a new blog, www.rushnext.com making a case for Rush to dump WRKO.)

The practical application of the fight against 1 party rule isn't really going to be won by a blog. It's going to be won by people refusing to tolerate the actions of all of those like the felon-bomb. Sad to say, it's past time to get the pitch forks and torches and take action.

NHradio, it would be the smartest thing for WRKO to do showing felon-bomb the door. That would demonstrate no disillusionment at all. Your Imus point is correct.

I have to admit, I used to leave my radio preset on 680 but I can say with pride that I have never listened to Tom Finneran. I understand he's had a parade of state-government hacks on, and he has performed for them the function of what in the porn industry is called a "fluffer" (and in the Mass. congressional delegation is called an "intern.")

If I'm stuck in the car, I listen to classical on 99.5 (although I hear that that may go to sports chat, since Entercom has screwed their EEI franchise up?) and occasionally flip over to AM for the news and traffic on WBZ. I've occasionally remembered to tune up RKO when Howie's on, but usually couldn't be bothered.

I do notice that the ads are split 50/50 between revenue ads and PSAs/Tommy Taxes promos. I'm not in the industry so I have no way of knowing if this is normal, but it seemed like an awful lot of promos.

I look forward to hearing Howie on WTKK. I don't think any FM station has the reach of a powerful AM station, though. My next truck will probably have a CD player or iPod input, and so, apart from the traffic reports, my radio listening will be over for good.

By the way -- if the WRKO employee really is an employee, no wonder Entercom is souped up like a screw sandwich. Palm Beach and Palm Springs are about 2,900 miles apart, genius. And I think Howie probably could cover Boston from there... heck, he lives out in the burbs now, and PB is less isolated, insular and inbred than Wellesley by a long shot.

Hi, it's me -- Jimmy Severino -- back from vacation. Didja miss me?!

I like to pretend I am a Viking or some kind of Norse sex god, but you all can read the latent signs, can't you? Thought so.

Hey Kevin R.C.,

Palm Beach/Palm Springs....it was a mistake. I meant to write Palm Beach but it came out the other way. Wow, I guess one can never have a typo either when writing on this blog. Settle down.

I agree with RKO Staffer. His audience is pretty fickle. If he did his show from sunny Palm Beach on a typical NE frozen February day, he'd def rub it in. He couldn't help himself. Next book signing, BAMM! The newly tarred and feathered NY Times best selling author. ;)

I moved from Massachusetts about 14 months ago to Maryland. Can't get Howie down here. My friend calls me about once a week and if I'm NOT home he leaves a machine message with two or three minutes of Howie. It makes my day. I don't need to kiss any ones butt and I'll tell ya this. I heard Howie might be leaving but Haven't heard any reason why.Howie Carr will be successful no matter where he is. I've listened to maybe 20 radio talk show hosts in the past 35 years. Howie Carr is by far the best. I will argue this with anyone. He has it all, knowledge, personality, humor, a great radio voice and maybe above all, he's respects his callers. He lets them talk!!! What a concept. Not a phony like Bill O'Reily and many others. Thanks Howie for all the hours of enjoyment over the years. You sure make the time fly while driving in the everyday horrendus traffic all over New England! Don't change a thing. Your absolutly the best.
