Expose The Hypocrisy

Reese Hopkins In Hot Water

Today's Herald has an exclusive story on the background of WRKO's Reese Hopkins, who may have been caught in a lie regarding his supposed 1991 graduation from Fordham University.

From Jessica Heslam's piece:

New WRKO radio morning talk show host Reese Hopkins boasts on the station’s Web site that he has a degree from Fordham University, but officials at the prestigious Catholic college in New York say they have no record of anyone graduating under that name, the Herald has learned.

Hopkins’ official biography on the WRKO-AM (680) Web site includes his 1991 graduation from Fordham in the second sentence. It’s also on his MySpace [website] page.

[...]

In a phone interview yesterday, Hopkins said he graduated from Fordham under a different name for “legal reasons.” He would not provide documented proof of his degree and would not say what name is on his degree.

“I had to go to college either under an emancipated name or under a guardianship, which is under my father’s name,” Hopkins said, refusing to provide his dad’s name as well. “It’s a private matter. I did graduate from Fordham University.”

WRKO program director Jason Wolfe did not respond to messages seeking comment yesterday.

Obviously, Coffee Boy
didn't see this one coming. Also note the absence of the usual dismissive statement from George Regan. Entercom's defenses were not in place this time, were they?

The bottom line is this: you've either got a degree or you don't. There's no reason to be secretive about it unless there's something to hide. If Reese graduated under a different name, it's easy enough to offer that information.

And it sure as hell isn't a "private matter". Reese decided to become a public person and what's listed here is open to journalistic scrutiny.

Hopkins obviously mistook Bay Staters for a bunch of hayseeds who wouldn't think to check his background claims.

What else don't we know about Reese Hopkins?

Reese we hardly knew ye. Apparently neither did wrko management. The bigger question is, why Fordham and not Harvard?
What a shocker, and he sounded so....authentic. pbbt.

Reese "G.E.D." Hopkins. A lie about his resume..the least of that nitwit's problems.

Posted by: Really Right at April 8, 2008 07:32 AM

A while back there was a post saying somebody padded their resume. Could this be the person?

If nobody is listening , why do we care?

Posted by: justasking/ at April 8, 2008 09:09 AM

I can't believe in this day and age of cyber-sleuthing someone can't come up with the truth.

You are all over this young man like a cheap suit for one reason and one reason only:

He is an African American.

Sad but boston always was and always will be a racist city.

WHY DON"T YOU GO LOOK INTO FINNERAN"S BACKGROUND? CARR"S? BRAUDE"S?

Posted by: Sadiki Trombone at April 8, 2008 10:39 AM

This practice is not uncommon. I worked at local university and we would often have calls come into the Registrar's Office to confirm graduation. WRKO can easliy demand confirmation of his degree. If he fails to produce it, he will/should be terminated. He doesn't owe the media anything. He owes his employer and, by extension as consumers, his listeners. Let the market work.

Posted by: AF at April 8, 2008 10:52 AM

This would matter if I listened to WRKO other than between 3-7. Rush Limbaugh now goes to my iPod.

Save WRKO is becoming an oxy moron...

Posted by: BostonVernon at April 8, 2008 10:57 AM

Reese done explained this to you all today.

Not that he has disambiguated the issue are you going to apologize to him?

Guy done raised himself up by his bootstraps to achieve greatness while the rest of you folks just happened to know the secret (white) handshake so get where you are that way.

Posted by: Sadiki Trombone at April 8, 2008 02:03 PM

I think it's now safe to say that Reese can't be trusted.

I'll still listen to his show, but his trustworthiness is about as strong as the felon's.

Posted by: Joe from Brighton at April 8, 2008 02:23 PM

Why am I not surprised?

Posted by: Pat Lucci at April 8, 2008 02:29 PM

Yeah, except that maybe Reese isn't his real name at all...maybe he uses an on air name so people will leave him alone when he's off air.

There are a lot of whack jobs listening to radio, Brian, as you should know.

Sure he's a public figure, but does that mean he isn't allowed a private life? Or does every nutjob the public contains have the right to go camp out on his back porch?

Really B, you've got a good thing going here at savewrko.com. You point out the real corruption and stupidity at RKO, and in the business in general around here.

Don't blow your own credibility Quit over stupid things like the fact that Reese probably uses an "air name" and likes to ride on public transportation. Neither of those things are important.

dood sayin' you graduated college under a different name? Now that's gangsta!

Posted by: Tony Jankowski at April 8, 2008 02:54 PM

Wow! Another blow to WRKO...couldn't happen to a crappier station! I do hope it is not true though...I don't like WRKO but I have no ill feelings towards Reese. I listen to Michael Graham and not his show BUT let's see if they keep him if this allegation proves to be true. They have a boring FELON on their station, so they would look bad if they fire a merely, could-be liar. They should just hire Mike Barnicle and let their lack of character shine like a billion suns!

I know Gregg Jackson is not one to lie and he uses facts BUT just 'cuz the host here disagrees that he is NOT to the left of Obama and Clinton does not mean he is refuting the fact that Romney is a crap conservative (or needs to go on the show as the other side). We are burdened with McCain...I think I would rather have Romney...agreeing that most of your complaints (if not all) are valid...it would be a battle of two liberal Republicans. I'd rather a conservative choice...it's not an option at this point. I have to spend the time learning what Gregg knows. He's a fair bloke...his co-host does not agree with him and yet they get on very well. Clarity is better than agreement. Oh, the the person saying the Host here is a "homophobe" is wrong. Just 'cuz one doesn't agree with Gay "Marriage" does NOT make them a homophobe. Easy to defend your side when you throw those bombs, eh? I hate that dopey Liberal tactic!

Did the name change happen before or after the crossover?

Posted by: Cap'n Spackle at April 8, 2008 04:48 PM

After reading the article, I actually listened to his show for the first time this morning to see what he had to say about it.

What a horrible show! He tried waayyy to hard to be funny.

You'd think that he would've figured out that this may be his chance to win over people like me that were curious and tuned in for the first time by putting together his best show....

I guess not.

Posted by: NHMan at April 8, 2008 07:16 PM

"logistics consultant"? Is that like a "sanitary engineer"? I think he actually seems like a decent enough guy but enough already with the NY "nom de gig" and the puffery. Earth to Reese: On the radio, no one cares where you went to school (or can tell the difference).

Posted by: Amanda Rekonwith at April 8, 2008 07:27 PM

Seldom right and wrong again. He did graduate from Fordham and this is a non-issue. Note that the Herald did not say that he *didn't* graduate, only that they could not substantiate that he did. Equivocation at its best from Jessica Heslam.

I'm glad she wrote it though, it seems to have lit a nice fire under Reese today. He's the best thing on WRKO right now, Howie included.

"secret white handshake"?

Posted by: medford jim at April 9, 2008 01:03 AM

I do not choose to listen to a radio show based on which college the host attended or even if the host attended college at all.

Verifying Reese's academic credentials are the least of WRKO's problems.

Maybe a little more focus on presenting listenable programming is in order.

Posted by: NHradiofan at April 9, 2008 01:47 AM

Leave the man alone! Sadiki right...you ofays just want to destroy another brother on the way up

Posted by: Dyer Ria at April 9, 2008 01:50 AM

Keep in mind, that Reese used to be a stand up comic. Hence is type of humor. He does try hard and it doesn't always work, but there are some pretty funny bits in there.

Posted by: Brian J. at April 9, 2008 06:13 AM

His wonderful explanation to all of us poor
and unwashed just leads to the speculation
that his brother is an only child.

Attention IMPOSTER, I hope you are enjoying yourself. It must be very hard for you not to have a personna of your own. How very very sad for you.

Posted by: the real Barbara at April 9, 2008 08:22 AM

I agree with nhradiofan that it makes no difference where someone went to school for me. As a matter of fact, other than Howie and Dale Arnold (who mention their college often), I am not sure if I even know where any of the hosts I listen to went to school.

The issue for me too is listenability, and Reece's show fails big time.

If yesterday's show is any indication of what he normally does, he is nothing more than a cheap, untalented rip off of Glenn Beck.

Posted by: NHMan at April 9, 2008 09:14 AM

Not meaning to get off the point of this post, Graham is ripping the AM talk station that hires felons / lobbyist as on air "talent" (OK you need to expand your definition of "talent".)

He's hitting at one of the biggest flaws of the new RKO.

Do you think they'll finally get it and "get off the take"?

Posted by: bjd at April 9, 2008 09:17 AM

I hope he's telling the truth about those "Club MTV" performances...what a LOSER.

Sadiki,
They basically did all that to Jay Severin (and his claim to have won a Pulitzer prize or something) a while back. Guess you missed that. Try again.

Posted by: Ev at April 9, 2008 03:32 PM

Yeah, you honkies went after that Severin, but that because he an I-talian. Don't you racist mofos call them I-talians "sandblasted negroes" anyway?

Posted by: Dyer Ria at April 9, 2008 06:06 PM

I listen to Reese on occasion and he's OK most of the time. I kinda like him, he's different.

In any event, most of the Talkers on radio these days sound like they haven't passed the 8th grade.

Posted by: Bluecat4usa at April 9, 2008 07:39 PM

dyer ria: we "honkies" call italians..."italians"

seems like you are prejudiced.

nice try dysentary! Jim Crow laws were overturned in 1964 with passage of the Civil Rights Act. Study history instead of practicing your victim mentality.
