Expose The Hypocrisy

Taking On Howie

At his Boston Herald blog page, Tai Irwin takes on Howie Carr, accusing him of "phoning-in" his radio program and newspaper column.

Irwin says he is willing to do both for free, if that's what it takes to put some energy back into our tired local media scene.

While I agree with some of his points, Tai's timing is off: Carr's listeners can't wait for him to return after suffering through a week of Fung Wah, his replacement.

The emails we've been receiving on this subject are amazing. Apparently, this is the first many had heard of the New Jersey hip hop promoter. Suddenly, Col Hunt's ramblings actually seem coherent by comparison.

I have a soft spot for Morning Guy Tai...used to listen to him on WFNX AND when he had a show on WRKO...he's got a good sense of humour.

Wow...guess Howie REALLY is phoning it in. I don't listen anymore (try Sean Hannity or Michael Medved!) so I have no idea how slow his show is and I only listened to Reese ONCE (but that was a great show) and I trust the opinions of most regulars here and I hear he is just DREADFUL. I hate to put down another Conservative (unless they are WRONG, or course)...especially a Black Conservative (more rare than Rocking Horse poop) so I guess I am sad it is not working out. I trust the opinions of the regs thou' so I believe there is credibilty he is AWFUL. Pity. Try radiotime.com and listen to your favourite virtually ANYTIME.

I don't understand this "phoning it in, lame howie" I have listened to Howie since 1987, his is still at the top of his game, nominee for Radio Hall of fame. He is rel pissed ay Julie and Jason for making him stay by matching WTTK offer. Howie and his lawyers dropped the ball big time on that one. Howie is punishing WRKO by taking all his "teacher holidays". But when he returns, he is still the King of the New england airwaves.

Not surprising that the Reese haters would come out in force here, but the feedback on the Radio-Info board is more mixed.

In the long run, this exposure may help him more than it will hurt.

I'm assuming that this is the same Tai that was on in the morning on WFNX years ago - is he any good? I never heard much of him.

Posted by: Fair and Balanced at April 23, 2008 02:21 PM

The feedback there is "mixed" because a couple of you are planting your own "feedback"!

Posted by: Brian Maloney at April 23, 2008 02:25 PM

I listened to Reese yesterday and thought he was not so bad. At this point I'd trade The Felon, Wendy Murphy and the entire weekend line up for him and a player to be named later.

Frankly, he was more interesting and entertaining than Severin who spends 15 minutes out of every hour telling us how smart he is, 15 minutes attacking Clinton (pick one), 15 minutes trying to convince everyone that he is a stud as opposed to his reality which includes a wife and kids and the final 15 minutes telling us about the view from his Manchester-by-the-Sea home.

Tai was on WFNX, WZLX, and even WRKO. He was also tech advisor for WMWM at Salem State, where I've been involved since 1981 (!) and called in on air to my big 25th anniversary show awhile back. Nice guy.
That being said, I disagree with his opinion on
Howie. Howie's worth to WRKO was proven recently in the legal battle to prevent him from going to WTKK.

I hope Tai winds up on air somewhere and for the record, his voice is just as good as Howie's if
not better.

I agree with Dave on Howie's worth and on
how he's taking all his "teacher's holidays".
He said as much when he returned in Nov.

Posted by: raccoonradio at April 23, 2008 03:10 PM

Well, if you count Skunky who thought Reese was "great" until everyone here told him that he wasn't and Pat, who has some credibility and says he's "not so bad", the response here is getting mixed as well. How do you explain that?

Posted by: Fair and Balanced at April 23, 2008 03:23 PM

Furthermore, I rechecked the Radio Info board and only 2/5 positive comments came from people who have shown pro-Entercom proclivities (which doesn't necessarily mean anything other than they disagree with you) and one came from an industry poster who has been exceedingly critical of Entercom on a regular basis. The other two are new to me. The guy doesn't suck people - keep an open mind.

I listened to the Crossover Negro yesterday. No wonder he hasn't been able to hold a job. He can't make a coherent point. I had the misfortune to tune in as he started on the Randi Goldklank issue about 5:00. After soliciting anyone who dealt with her in the past to call in ( nice, you know how much airtime people with hearsay stories get) he then started grilling Sandy about how much she can drink. Scintillating radio. He eventually tried to make the point that if she checks into rehab it’s the law she can't loose her job (obviously the Crossover Negro also attended Harvard Law under another name as well). The person in the room who passed the bar tried to set him straight, but he defended himself with the tried and true " I read that someplace". Please, please please Crossover Negro, Steve Martin said it best in Planes, Trains & Automobiles - When you're speaking to someone, try to have a point! It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!

Babble talk radio. between the Crossover Negro's inability to make a point and defend it, the Felon's umm, ahhs and drymouth lipsmacks, Wendy Murphy's fingernails across the chalkboard screeching, Marjorie Claprood ear bleeding Ruth Buzzi impersonation, Joan Vennochi's liberal verbal diarrhea I am stunned that ANYONE continues to tune into this station.

Howie mailing it in is 10 times better than the usual suspect’s best effort. Of course he can do a half ass job. Because no one there will even come close to half ass!

Hey Raccoon (sez this WMWM alum from the 80s), are you who I think you are?

Posted by: Mike at April 23, 2008 04:02 PM

Fair, I'm a FEMALE but that's not your only error...how the heck could I think he was great when I've said many times I have only heard his program ONCE? I listened to it on archive and I don't think you can count that show (interview with Peter Paul) as his average show...It was good in my opinion as I found the interview fascinating and I bet you couldn't find a show of his that good. If he had to pick his BEST show I reckon he'd pick THAT ONE!

I just wanted the facts on Reese as someone who can't judge his show FAIRLY! I don't listen to WRKO anymore and it would be disingenuos of me to PRETEND I do! I trust the point of view of the Regs here AND I think it's a pity he may be a fake (my thought after reading MANY posts stating so) because he portrays himself as a Conservative. I listen to MICHAEL GRAHAM so there is no way I will listen to Reese...I'm not even tempted. I'm Fair & Balanced and your blowing smoke!

well, if popularity and survival is valued in the cut-throat radio industry, I'd say Howie has poor old obscuro Tai Stickley beat by a mile....and I DID use to hear him on FNX when they were still taking chances, even tho their predecessor WLYN was a million times bettah!!!

Posted by: jim at April 23, 2008 04:39 PM

What is all this insider lingo code for?

Posted by: curious at April 23, 2008 05:06 PM

What does it matter really.

WRKO is like that stiff flat hard road kill that you can pick up by the tail and the thing stands straight up on its own. Then of course you toss it out in the middle of the road and watch it get hit a few more times.

HAHAHAHAHAHOHOHOHOHEHEHEHE

What a khant!

Posted by: James at April 23, 2008 05:12 PM

Tai's absolutely right. If you were to check the Sunday Herald September 9,2001,you'd find most of Howie's column from today. Right after Paula Zahn got fired from Fox Howie did his "Channel 7 Days" column.

This "Dave" who thinks Howie is in his prime is clueless. Howie of 1994-1997 was his prime..he's been jaking it for a long time, well before last summer's standoff.

Howie is using the negro to make himself look good...

Posted by: Really Right at April 23, 2008 05:14 PM

I remember when morning guy Tai was co-hosting AM drive at WRKO with Marjerie Claprood. At least that's my recollection - yeah, I'm a long time listener. As I recall he does have a good voice.

Unfortunately, even though I still listen, I do agree with him about Howie phoning it in. And I don't think Howie is making much of a mystery about it. Also unfortunately, even though he's phoning it in, it's still better than most of the stuff on the air. It is a sad state of affairs when the guy on autopilot is more interesting than those that are allegedly trying.

I do think it is odd that Howie wrote (again) about how much he hates the marathon when he wasn't even in the state but that's between him and the rag he works for. They let him slide for sure.

As for Reese, he is pretty bad. He drove me to Severin the other day and that's saying something. I actually miss the Colonel. Now that's really sad.

Skunky - apologies on the gender bender and the mischaracterization. My point was that your only experience was positive, yet based on nothing more than what others say you were willing to discount your own experience and accept the negative word of others. Like him or don't, you should make up your own mind. Maybe next time Graham is on vacation you'll give him a few minutes and decide for yourself. Doesn't much matter to me either way, but again, my apologies for any offense.

Posted by: Fair and Balanced at April 23, 2008 06:23 PM

Thank you Fair...I appreciate it. I will try to listen to some archives...can you recommend any that you enjoyed? The Peter Paul interview was VERY compelling due to the subject matter...I barely remember Reese as the topic was Hillary Clinton. The trouble I may have is many here have discussed he's phony (his so-called Conservatism) and there is the matter of his credentials. When I listened to Howard Stern on terrestrial, I never listened to to those who copied him as I found them phony and why listen when my fav. was the best and true? I do need to listen for myself, but the peeps here are the ones who pointed out how good that Peter Paul Interview was...and they were Posters who already said they didn't like his style. They gave him his due.

IS THAT TRUE ABOUT JAY SEVERIN? I didn't know he was married with kids...he plays off he's single and uses Asian broads? That is fascinating. I have to agree with the many who can't handle Vay Cay Jay...I listen ONLY when he's talking about the election AND if I'm out and my Satellite Radio can't receive.

Posted by: Skunky at April 23, 2008 06:43 PM

Thats right Brian they are planting their own mixed reviews and it is so obvious.

I don't think any of the legits here do not realize that.

What they don't know is how entertaining it is watch them squirm by keeping up the childish charades.

Just talk around them mates!

Posted by: Sorenson at April 23, 2008 09:54 PM

Skunky, he is married. His wife is named Renee and he has at least 1kid. I thought he would drop the pretense when he actually moved up here.

Posted by: Karen at April 23, 2008 09:56 PM

And Skunky: You have a soft spot alright.

The one that never closed on your head and I think you have a leak.

ew. something stinks.

Posted by: James at April 23, 2008 09:57 PM

I go back to the original Jerry Williams days and have been a talk radio junkie since. I am in the process of breaking the habit of listening to talk radio beacuse it has become uninteresting junk...Howie included. When Howie is good, he is great. The problem is he rarely makes that effort any longer. He goes with the easy reach...the Colonel, the veteranian, the tv guide guy...all boring after the first appearance. The rest of the talk show landscape with the exception of Michael Graham is dreadful. The Felon, Reese, Giggles Eagan and Jay "Hugh Heffner" all are uninteresting and many times uninformed. They are all mediocre people who have the megaphone on a radio station to amplify their self serving biases...I find myself shutting them off more and more often.

Posted by: Larry at April 24, 2008 07:47 AM

I direct this to some, not all: Are you so narrow minded that you believe that the only people who could have an opinion that contradicts yours are "plants"? That kind of myopia is what got President Bush in trouble. Here's a newsflash: taste is subjective!

Skunky, thanks for the response and for those of you coming down on her for responding to me in a civil manner, shame on you. It is called courtesy, try it sometime. Anonymity is not an excuse for boorish behavior and name calling. We can completely disagree on all substantive issues without the ad hom attacks.

Regarding specific Reese stuff, I haven't listened a ton myself, the time slot is kind of tough for me, but I have enjoyed his POV on Hillary and Obama and his general rapport with a number of his callers. I also enjoyed his talk with KRS-1, a rapper that most of us would know best from his cameo at the end of REM's "Radio Song", but who has carved out an identity for himself in the hip hop community.

Posted by: Fair and Balanced at April 24, 2008 09:31 AM

Wendy Murphy has a coating of teflon. Read "Until Proven Innocent" by Stuart Taylor of Newsweek magazine, the book about the Duke lacrosse fiasco. Most everyone else has apologized for the legal lynching of those guys. Not Wendy, who was named as one of the worst offenders. Guess demagoguing child abuse is good for business.

Posted by: agingcynic at April 24, 2008 10:27 AM

Maybe Jules will hire Tai to try to antagonize Howie even more.

And maybe we have a spot here for that channel 7 GM... Jules says she reminds her of her at that age.

I love my Jules, and would be nothing without her.

Posted by: Julie's Lackey at April 24, 2008 10:49 AM

ENOUGH ALREADY!! Will you freakin people
change the freakin station or shut the damn
thing off! Go for a walk if you are able.

Posted by: curious at April 24, 2008 12:05 PM

I am fair. I'm fairly certain Reese sucks. I'm not so narrow minded to think he just sucks though. I also think he stinks, he's a fraud, he has no talent, and doesn't have the qualifications to be a talk radio host in Boston.

Posted by: BigBish at April 24, 2008 12:13 PM

curious, so you came to a web site that's set up to criticize WRKO in order to complain that you're sick of people criticizing WRKO? Makes a whole lotta sense.

Posted by: Cap'n Spackle at April 24, 2008 01:08 PM

Cap'n, Now we are even

Posted by: curious at April 24, 2008 04:09 PM

Bigbish...did you really just refer to Reese as a "crossover Negro"? Wow, pretty sad. I guess your parents raised you a bigot.

Howie would be fine if he got rid of the completely irrelevant Max Robbins and the boring Vet. Why, do you have these losers on the air Howie....why???

Posted by: WRKO Staffer at April 25, 2008 08:44 AM

Staffer, if you're such an expert, why don't you know that Reese called HIMSELF "The Crossover Negro" in NYC from 2001 to 2005? Didn't read the Globe welcome interview? No internet in the broom closet?

Posted by: agingcynic at April 25, 2008 11:49 AM

My bad, I apologize to BigBish.

Posted by: WRKO Staffer at April 25, 2008 05:41 PM

Flash: Herald has dropped Tai's blog. Perhaps
this column was the last straw.
