Walls Caving In At WRKO

Entercom's failed decision-making process just keeps coming back to haunt the company as one flap after another envelopes WRKO.

This week, it's back-to-back kerfuffles for the station, as Reese's fishy bio is followed by The Felon's outright defiance on the lobbying issue.

That's got the Herald very busy, where keeping up with the Guest Street trainwreck is a full-time job.

At this point, Entercom seems particuarly unsure how to handle these situations. The Reese story was met with the usual personal attacks, while Finneran's sleazy packy lobbying has the 'Commies oddly silent.

Especially bold is Finneran's assertion he will attempt to bore Boston for years to come with his awful attempt at talk radio.

It's enough to make David Field head to his Nantucket compound a few months early this year.

WOW, a lobbyist with 4 hours of drive time air. He'll be getting paid by special interest to get stuff through the state AND have the oportunity to sell it to the people too.

All that's missing in this is a radio personality with enough talent to make it work.

If RKO does not see the problem with this they have no business being in radio OR their goal is to turn RKO into 1 big infomercial. Nothing but "spackle and special interests".

Imagine a felon that's a lobbyist and the voice of the people on talk radio. Only in Massachusetts! Any body want to guess if we'll be the only state in the nation next year that loses population again?

Posted by: BostonVernon at April 9, 2008 11:12 AM

As I said yesterday about the Hopkins mess, Why am I not surprised?

As long as the Felon supports their agenda he'll be fine. RKO does NOT see this as a problem, they see it as another step in killing Conservative Radio. Where Air America failed RKO will suckseed, that's clearly the goal anyway. They'll stop playing Baseball when they have no real conservative hosts to preempt.

When will RKO sip from the testosterone cup and fire this fool? Are they actually afraid of the felon? Things that make you go hmmmmmm!

Let me try to wrap my head around this.

The felon, scumbag , perjurer, talent- less overpaid POS who was an oily politician in his prior career and was responsible for me continuing to pay a ' temporary sales tax through his sleaziness, now wants to be a lobbyist.

He's already proven his trustworthiness to his constituents by redistricting blacks who may not have voted for him away from his district. Of course, there's that bigotry showing. Then, he perjured himself in front of a Federal Grand Jury to cover it up. He loses his license to practice law, his pension, garners probation and cannot run for political office again. He cries like a baby and any pretence of him having a pair is then tossed out the window. Of course, he was whacked up on Advil, so maybe he should get a little slack.

Then, he solidifies his commitment to his big buck WRKO contract by deciding he's going to start a lobbying firm. F U WRKO, just like always, I'm going to set myself up at someone else’s expense, be it you or the taxpayer. WRKO balks and the Felon backs down.

NOW suddenly, it’s not just “I want to set up a lobbying firm" .... It's “I’ve met with my attorney and it’s OK for me to set up a lobbying firm”.

How committed is this guy to what he's signed on for? Here's a hint. It’s less than one and more than -1. ZERO.

Nice job WRKO. Entercom is the enabler for this hole to just do what he's always done - make money at someone else's expense.

No conflict of interest here. Tommy's a man of the people. I was just listening to him the other morning talking about how he was raking his own yard at his Cape Escape. You'd never think he was a bigot or a self serving liar.

What a joke.

Nope, I'm sitting here and the walls are definitely not caving in. In need of some paint and yes, spackle, but not caving in.

CBS News isn't "melting down" either. They are just continuing to explore cost efficiencies at a time when network news is rapidly becoming an anachronism. They have been talking to CNN for years, I hope they get something done. They are a third place (at best) brand in a dying sector of the business. If they can provide news on the cheap it allows them to pay more for the best entertainment and live sports, the things that people continue to use broadcast television for. Makes sense to me, but I'm a business person, not a former talk show host who is disconnected from the business side of his former industry yet still feels compelled to act like an expert.

Felon Finneran needs to be removed. His ratings suck and he's about as interesting as a dentist visit.

Posted by: Joe from Brighton at April 9, 2008 02:27 PM

LOL! Howie is all over this right now!

Posted by: the real Barbara at April 9, 2008 03:09 PM

It seems that the death grip management at RKO is slipping. Capin' Graff mentioned something about AM drive being for sale.

Come back Capin'! You're not forgotten, yet.

Get that Fairness Doctrine pushed through and Finneran's four-hour stint will be cut in half if opponents play their cards right. Make life for the little bald man miserable.

Mister Speaker is laughin' all the way to the bank, as another poster said in here once?

Wow, how come I can't be paid like this jerk?

Maybe I can "meet" him accidentally some day in a bar? Hmmm... you know how I dig married guys.

Posted by: joy at April 9, 2008 04:00 PM

The Felon is a scumbag. Always will be.
Hi basically said to himself, I don't care what they tell me, I can do whatever I want. It's the same mentality of most elected officials in this state. They think they are above the law and rules that the rest of us have to follow. His arrogance is infinite.

What a kahnt

This piece of crap (THE FELON) has redefined the word hubris. This DB has been on the air a year longer than he should. Shame on the 'tards who actually listen to him! I wondered why Vay Cay Jay alluded to this this am when he called into Michael Graham's show. Now I know.

I hope this numbers the days of the Fahkahtah Felon! WHO WOULD EVEN GIVE HIM THE TIME OF DAY TO LISTEN TO HIS BORING HORSE S***!!!!! Get off of Boston radio, FELON...you friggen' SUCK! (As does WRKO!!!)

Michael Graham tore into the Felon on air this morning in his opening monologue. I'm going to try to find the podcast and post a link.

Attention Finneranophobes and Finneranophiles:

On Today’s show (4/10), depending on your preference, he’s got those top three knaves or faves, Gonzo, Wendy Murphy, and Deval Patrick. Tom himself even refers to today’s show as the ”Funhouse.”

Posted by: Jim from Boston at April 10, 2008 06:34 AM

LOL Joy! I am going to call this guy's "show" this morning and give him a tongue lashing.

Posted by: the real Barbara at April 10, 2008 07:17 AM

Brian,

At 8:26am on WRKO Wendy Murphy (that classy chick) just said "dicked around."

Is that allowed?

Juicy! I have to go wankle now... this is sexy sweet tawk radio!

Posted by: Hugh Jass at April 10, 2008 08:30 AM

Jim, thanks for the info! All the more reason not to bother turning the dial to RKO! I turned it on last nite thinking the stoooooooooooopid basketball game was over and WHAT did I hear? SOCCER....come on RKO, give it a bleepin' rest, I want my TALK station back.

Posted by: the real Barbara at April 10, 2008 09:11 AM

I can now say that Julie has told Finneran that he will not be doing any more lobbying in MA or any other state.

When Julie puts her (spike-heeled, FMP) foot down, you know she's serious.

Posted by: Julie's Lackey at April 10, 2008 10:54 AM

Finneran, Reese, and Russshhhhhhhhhh aren't doing well for RKO. The shows place 25th and 26th while WTKK came in 9th with Imus and 8th with Graham and Eagan and Braude

http://bostonherald.com/business/media/view.bg?&articleid=1086171&format=&page=2&listingType=media#articleFull

Some wondered if Finneran's ratings would suffer if he had Howie on WTKK opposite him. But he's actually being beaten by a whole bunch of other stations (including the man Howie calls "the corpse in a cowboy hat")
even with Howie safely in the afternoon WRKO lineup rather than at WTKK (no word from Herald on what HC's ratings were)

If WRKO were a station running all syndie in those time slots (say, Air America, Jones, or Salem shows)
those numbers would probably lead to a change of hosts, maybe even a format change.
Instead RKO gets them with six hours of local and three of the #1 talk host nationwide. What gives, Entercom?

Posted by: raccoonradio at April 10, 2008 11:37 AM

Well, i'm less worried about a fishy bio and whatnot. What is caving WRKO in for me is the night time programming. I think I'm one of the few people who actually LIKE michael savage and gerry doyle, and when i go to bed at night, i like to play the radio. sometimes i have to turn it down when michael starts screaming, but overall it is programming i enjoy.

i do not like the celtics. and college sports bore me on the radio. i don't like listening to baseball on the radio... i'll watch it on TV if i want to watch a sox game. and last night was the icing on the cake.

Friggin' SOCCER. Soccer on the radio. Who the hell wants to listen to THAT?!

Is this a TALK station or a SPORTS station? It is no longer a talk station in my opinion. It has passed into a virtually all sports radio station... they pre-empt their cash cow Howie carr (by the way -- i can't listen to his show anymore because it is 20 minutes of advertising in a 60 minute period) to broadcast baseball.

WRKO sucks. I'm done with them. I am bringing my XM receiver upstairs and will listen to someting on XM at night... I'll even listen to Opie and Anthony before I listen to anymore sports on this rotten station.

Jerks.

I caught the tail end of Reese's show today (Apr. 10) and he said that he'll be filling in for Howie Carr during an upcoming week. I don't remember exactly what week.

Can you believe this?

Posted by: JazzOrganist at April 10, 2008 01:31 PM

Christine, I agree wholeheartedly with your observations. I WANT MY TALK STATION BACK! I too tuned in last nite to hear SAVAGE and much to my horror I heard the Celtics, I tuned in again around 10:45 to hear Doyle and my ears were assaulted with Soccer, I am as disgusted with RKO as you are.

Jazz.....I believe Reese said the week of the 21st he will be filling in for Howie,,,I can't believe that....so the question now is, who the hell will be filling in for Reese if he's doing four hours for Howie? Are ya telling me NO ONE was available to fill in for Howie except for Reese, or, are they giving him more exposure because he's just such a great talent?

Posted by: the real Barbara at April 10, 2008 05:05 PM

Nice hearing the above complaints about the WRKO line-up.

Red Sox game is on right now on WRKO and WCRN (grumble, grumble), so I'm streaming Bruce Williams on WNTK.com. My only other alternatives under my current listening circumstances are downloads of Coast-to-Coast AM or townhall.com (Savage is my first choice at this time of day. Not interested in WBZ.)

Posted by: Jim from Boston at April 10, 2008 07:43 PM

i can understand why rko has baseball and basketball; they paid for the rights to be "the flagship station". at least they toss off the night celtics games to 850am. but soccer? ugh!

brian? any ratings info on soccer on rko? does it beat savage or doyle?

Posted by: medford jim at April 10, 2008 08:39 PM

Entercom prob has to carry Kraft's soccer team
as part of the deal to have Patriots Monday. Sometimes the games would run on WEEI tape
delayed at midnight. The other night, it was WEEI's turn to carry the Sox so the Celts game was pushed to WRKO (now, so much for "WRKO,
Flagship Station of the Sox" and "WEEI, Flagship
Station of the Celts"). Due to contracts, WRKO
_had_ to run Celts and then the Revs. WRKO
becomes WEEI-2.
