Expose The Hypocrisy

A Media Pet Peeve

I can't stand it when certain American antique media outlets use "Myanmar" and "Yangon" to refer to Burma and its capital, Rangoon. The former terms are inventions of the current regime rather than a decision made by its people.

Foreign media outlets, including the BBC, almost always correctly call it Burma, while the NYT sticks with Myanmar, even "correcting" the US ambassador's wife when she uses the proper name.

To their credit, The Globies seem to be defying their New York masters and using Burma.

Again, it should never, ever be called "Myanmar" unless you enjoy seeing monks tortured as they fight for the freedom of Burma's citizens.

Thanks for letting me vent on this one. Now back to our regular programming.

Brian-
you are 110% CORRECT! It is Burma. Venting is good.

I couldn't give a crap about any non-caucasians in this world being killed halfway around the world. In fact, if you are not a white Irish kid from Boston I could care less. I am parochial like that. Anyone who grew up with forced busing would be. See? That's a little insight into me the man versus me the dominant blogger on this little blog. I dominate anyone and everyone who challenges me. Any questions, wimps?

I agree with you, Brian.

But what does this have to do with WRKO?

Burma Death Toll May Exceed 100,000.

How many is that in Americans?

I share your pet hate, Brian!

I always think of Burma when stupid whinging Yanks start bitching about how crappy America is. America is trying to offer help but the oppressive Military Junta doesn't give a crap about their people JUST about keeping their atrocities under wraps.

I'm glad I'm American. I'm glad to live here no matter how crappy I think life may get. I am thankful and appreciative for all our blessings like running water 24/7 and Supermarkets loaded with food. If ever the hardworking peeps who deliver our food to the Supermarkets couldn't, we'd only get a slight taste of what a hell-hole Burma is! Think about our easy access to food, our running water and electricity next time you wanna bitch and moan (dopey Libs!)! Those creeps ought to be forced to live in Burma for ONE MONTH. They'd come back to the USA more patriotic than General Patton!

Skunky makes an excellent point.

One of the other things I love about America is that we can (and should) permit all kinds of speech, personal choices and other rights that some may personally disagree with and possibly even find abhorrent, all in the interest of personal freedom. It is our responsibility to inform ourselves and think critically so as to put it all in an appropriate context. Basically, while I would not choose to express myself in that manner, I buy the notion that our soldiers fight to protect the rights of those that burn the flag in protest of the military at home. A country that can embrace that dichotomy is a beautiful thing in my mind. Have a good weekend.

I am always reminded of the line from the J. Peterman character on Seinfeld, "Myanmar, but you may know it as Burma" and would smile to myself if it weren't such a horrible tragedy.
