Expose The Hypocrisy

The Seventeen Minute Gap

Driving home this evening, I thought I'd check out the end of Vay Cay's WTKK show, but really caught just the last minute or so.

So I decided to wait and hear the transition to Michele McPhee's evening show.

Big mistake.

Between promos, paid spots, news, weather and other clutter, there was an almost-Nixonian 17 minute gap between the two shows.

There was no live crossover between McPhee and Severino to promote her program, no live or taped tease for the next hour, NOTHING.

Nothing, that is, except Greater Media pleading with the listener to change the station. I only stuck with it for the sake of this website, I would have much rather switched to a CD than endure this.

Hamsters and squirrels could program a radio station better than this!

17 minutes of non-program is par for the course on Dennis & Callahan at the 9:00 break.

And what's with Severin ending his show at 6:52 the last few weeks?

Hmmmm...hamsters. My favorite marital aid!

Was the 17 minutes of crap any worse than the 8+ minutes of dead air on Reese's show this morning? WRKO cannot even manage to stay on the the air. Sad.

Hamsters and squirrels beat the monkeys programming WRKO.

17 minutes vs all of am drive + midday.

WTKK wins that walking away.

i can't listen to rko, even during rush and "capin' graf's" show. the promos for felon and reese make me sick.

thank God for 830 and the fact that rush is all over the place. too bad for advertisers on rko, I'm in that demo they LOVE!

I turned on WBZ at 10 but switched over to Laura Ingraham about 15 minutes after the news update. Laura was in commercial - I fell asleep and woke up about 30 minutes later and they were in another commercial!

Brian, what is the solution for this - a housecleaning at WTKK? That being said, I will always respect my man, my idol, my "mentor" Jay Severin. He is to my side what Keith Olberman is to the left: the holy grail of all that's worth knowing. I kneel at the temple of Jay Severin. I was a pabulum puking liberal until Jay showed me the light. Now I am a card-carrying member of the n r a. I joined a mylitia group. I am adamantly pro life. I pad my resume. Talk radio in Boston made me the man I am today. I say hurrah to it, but fewer commercials, too!

They got to ya didn't they Brian.
What did they do threaten your fam? what?
Tell us man. Celtic can "fix it".

sniff.

Somewhere, Boys & Girls, there are iPods out there with your names on them. And free audio podcasts to download fresh every night. These are free AND commercial-free. The best way to beat these radio stations back is to simply abandon them until they program with respect to the listener rather than program to line their pockets.

17 minutes is the norm for D&B and Ordway on 'EEI and they have 2 of these an hour. That means that 'EEI has more commercials than content per hour.

When you have to have a bumper to say that the program will resume in a moment, your commercial breaks are too long.

Brian, you've hit on my big complaint with TKK and I've posted comments about it before. As you said, they appear to be begging you to change the station, and I do.

I also listen to WEEI a lot and I never feel like the commercials or breaks are excessive. The commercial breaks are spread around and usually not too long. Unlike TKK, I actually listen to the commercials on EEI. They don't try to give you news weather, traffic, business reports, etc. They seem to understand that they are a sports station. Why doesn't TKK get that? Why are they trying to be WBZ and a talk station at the same time?

If I were program director at TKK I would have Jay on AT 5 pm when everyone gets in their cars for drive time. I would drop all the news, weather, sports, etc. and just let Jay tell us what is important in the news. Highlight Jay! He's the reason people tune in, not the generic filler that you can get on dozens of other stations and with a few clicks on the Internet.

Why would you hire a high priced talent like Jay and put him on so little? Does he have a clause in his contract that limits his on-air time to 20 minutes an hour?

Imagine if you sat down to watch your favorite TV show at 8 but it didn't start until 8:10 because of news, weather, commercials, etc. Then imagine that the show was only on for 20 minutes of the hour. No one would watch. Why does TKK get away with this insanity?

One more thing I've always wondered about: How does an advertiser feel when his commercial is #8 in a 10 minute commercial deluge? Does he think anyone is still listening?

I too have overdosed on the felon and reese promo's on rko, it's endless and nauseating. I'm starting to overdose on hearing Howie promote Wellesley Hollow. Right now the felon is promoting some estate planning company. The sound of his voice is nauseating! The other day I heard an rko promo, something to the effect "we have Boston talking", yeah, we're talking alright and it ain't pretty! Sometimes at nite rko has dead air for lengthy periods of time, I don't get it, however, sometimes dead air is better than the program that's supposed to be on!

Whenever TKK goes into breaks and promos, I have to turn down my car radio. Rather than use real music, all their promos have loud noises, scratchy electronic pulses, R2D2 sounds and pots and pans banging together. I realize these things are necessary to wake up the listener to make sure they hear the commercials, but frankly, it's a lot of freakin' noise and I refuse to listen to it.

Vita, another annoying thing about WTKK is the audio... The hosts are usually about 3x louder than the callers, so I have to constantly adjust the volume when I'm in the car.

Nice try "vita roos"
Did you forget where you were for a minute?

People actually 'get it' here.

To Cap'n Spackle: I noticed the same thing. I e-mailed TKK a while back regarding the volume problem (particularly bad on Eagan and Braude) and shockingly, they never even acknowleged my e-mail. Why do stations bother giving the listeners a e-mail address when they don't even have someone to give you a courtesy reply?
