Expose The Hypocrisy

No Winners In Goldklank Saga

Despite the severity of her airport tirade, Randi Goldklank is apparently getting just a slap on the wrist. As she's been undergoing treatment since the now-infamous April incident, it's clear Randi's been given a second chance.

We can debate the merits of her non-punishment until the cows come home, but I'm more interested in the career fallout. She's "decided to resign" from her GM position at WHDH-7; whether that was really her choice is unknown.

But it's another reminder of the intense pressures in the broadcast industry that have been the undoing of so many people. This is a brutal business where career lifespans can be short and subject to termination at any time.

I'm not rationalizing her behavior or addiction in any way. But there are no winners in Randi's sad saga and her downfall should serve as a sobering reminder of what this insane business can do to one's mental health.

I agree that the business must take an awful lot out of people in it. I'm not speaking from first-hand experience, but I can appreciate the almost suffocating pressure that must exist day-in and day-out. Now, what I don't understand is WHY is there so much pressure? The eyeballs that have abandoned TV news have done so for good. Like Larry Bird and Kevin McHale...they aren't walkin' through that door, folks. The business is operating within a shrunken market, so when these people beat themselves and everyone else up over delivering 'higher ratings,' it's almost like a zero-sum game: You're still playing in a much smaller sandbox than you did in the 1980s and 1990s. That is irrefutable.
