Expose The Hypocrisy

Notes From The Road

After spending part of the week in New York City, I'm now back home in New England. On Tuesday, I was at the FOX News Channel, where I did my bit for the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy.

Because Amtrak service has been curtailed beyond Mystic this week, I drove to New London to catch the Northeast Regional (no Acela this time, it hasn't gone north of NYC this week and I had no desire to repeat my last experience). Oddly, hardly anybody was riding the normally-packed trains, the service outage scared most of them away.

During the drive to New London (civic motto: where your "private property" belongs to politicians), I listened to quite a bit of talk radio. Impressions:

WRKO: The Felon was struggling to get through the show as usual. Lately, there's a tone of desperation apparent at times, as though he knows the vanished audience has defeated him. This wretched show should have been put to sleep a long time ago. Why does it continue?

WTKK: As he
addressed his latest flap, Imus actually had a bit of entertainment value, a rarity these days. He's doing well for WTKK, but for how long?

WPRO: As he dug into the issue of an non-deported illegal alien who kidnapped and raped a Providence woman and the resulting political fallout, John DePetro was doing a great job. Unlike the nervous wreck he often appeared to be while at WRKO, he's in his element at WPRO.

I also liked the fact that WPRO still has a functioning newsroom that can deliver updates to the hosts as they develop. It sure exposes WRKO for the two-bit operation it has become.

I only had one small complaint: he needs to quickly reset his topic after returning from each break. Anyone tuning in after the hour has begun isn't going to have a clue about the issue at hand.

Driving the length of Rhode Island, it quickly becomes clear why WPRO has migrated to FM. Their 630 AM signal is lacking in many areas.

WHJJ: Another nice
surprise was hearing Todd Feinburg filling in at WHJJ, which is largely syndicated and poorly marketed these days. Todd was clearly enjoying having a chance to be back behind a local microphone.

On the late evening drive home, I caught Michael Savage with a female guest who was talking to the audience in Spanish, a truly surreal experience.

That was followed by a host whose voice I didn't recognize, who gave a lifeless, sadly low- energy take on the Gloucester pregnancy pact. In 20 minutes of listening, he never identified himself or the program.

Only during the next break did I learn who I was listening to: a former actor who decided to play radio and convinced a syndicator this wretched program should go national. It's used by the firm as a "must carry" add-on: if a station wants a more-coveted show they own, it's required to run his as well.

That was a lot of talk radio listening in one dose, wasn't it? Overall, I believe the Providence stations sounded far superior to their Boston counterparts. Remember when the Hub was a nationally-recognized center for compelling talk radio?

Insightful as always, Brian. I never though Depetro too bad a host, a bit over the top perhaps on things GLBT. But you gotta take the good with the bad with any host.

The Felon, though, everyone knows he's for crap. Even Margery and Jim were piling on him yesterday for his fawning, kid-gloves treatment of Rep. Fagan. I support Fagan's comments in theory of protecting one's client to the hilt, but Finneran did not even ask a single tough question. Instead, he merely provided a forum for his ol' Beacon Hill cronie to defend himself. Sad when talk radio is run by non-professional journos. We need more pros with educational and with practical experience in the medium, like you and like Pat Lucci... then we listeners would all be better off.

What's the Over / Under on how long felon stays on air? Is that Claprood getting ready to sing? Replacing a babbling idiot that doesn't know what a complete sentence is with the shrill lunacy of a Randi Rhodes wannabe sounds like a stroke of genius. My guess is those making on air decesions at RKO went to the same 'radio school' as those that ran Air Amerika. Better yet, add claprude and wendy to felons show. All that's missing a catchy name for the new RKO morning experience.

DePetro still on air? What, are there no fat lesbians in Rhode Island? Maybe they are not spoken of in Rhode Island. I liked DePetro, especially his coverage of the tunnel collapse. It would be interesting to hear his take on the Glouster HS "pact" that "doesn't exsist".

Who was the former actor? You didn't mention it.

"a former actor who decided to play radio and convinced a syndicator this wretched program should go national."

That wasn't Jerry Doyle, was it? I think he actually has a pretty good show. I listen to him on 1590 out of Nashua on my way home from work. Better than hearing Howie go on about pet medical issues.

The Boston board at radio-info.com has an entry stating that The Felon claims that Howie's show is 12th in the ratings. Do you know anything to support that? (Could be true because Howie is not trying very hard these days.)

Closer to home, I caught a little bit of Dan Rea's show on WBZ last night while driving back home from an errand. He had on Dan Kennedy to talk about the annual Boston Phoenix "Muzzle" awards.
This is a cute little annual feature that they do to point out what they consider to be individuals or organizations who "[trample] on the rights of free speech and personal liberties in New England."

There was at least one thing that was bugging me about what I thought I heard when I first turned on the radio. It sounded to me as though Kennedy had a bug up his ass about how the Bush administration had the unmitigated audacity to prevent some foreign academic repeatedly come over here and speak out against US policies, so I figured I'd check the article.

http://thephoenix.com/Boston/News/63798-11th-Annual-Muzzle-Awards/

Let's check out the opening paragraphs:

"Freedom of expression may be guaranteed by the Constitution. But it’s an idea we have to fight for every day.

That has never been more true than in the post–9/11 era. Just ask Adam Habib, a South African academic of Muslim heritage and critic of the war in Iraq, who’s been banned from speaking in Boston this summer because of secret — and, he insists, nonexistent — evidence that he has ties to terrorism."

Hmmm. Yeah, OK. So now the Bill Of Rights applies to South Africans who want to come over here and criticize US policy. Riiiight. Did anyone else hear this show? Did Rea (who's usually a pretty sensible guy) challenge him on this?

Say what you want about John DePetro, but he was, and is, much better than the two hosts who now occupy his slot. (Reminder: he was on WRKO from 9-12, thus, he had one hour of Finneran's coma-inducing program and all of Reese's time of hyperactive rantings masquerading as real knowledge of Boston.)
